Job description

The Canada Games Centre (CGC) is a vibrant multi-sport community and recreation centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Position Summary

Reporting to the Aquatics Program Supervisor and under the direction of the Aquatics Program Coordinator, this role is responsible for delivering a high-quality aquatic experience to members and guests in a fast-paced, growing environment.

Responsibilities
  1. Ensure the safety of patrons through prevention and timely response to injuries, incidents, and emergencies in programs.
  2. Provide emergency care and treatment by attaining Lifeguard intervention certification.
  3. Enhance customer engagement by adhering to and delivering public education on programs, policies, procedures, and safety supervision standards.
  4. Complete administrative and risk management duties accurately and within deadlines (lesson plans, program worksheets, report cards, participant assessments).
  5. Deliver quality programs.
  6. Maintain required certifications for the position.
  7. Perform maintenance responsibilities to keep the facility safe and clean (cleaning, inventory, proper storage of equipment).
  8. Perform other duties as directed by policies and procedures or supervisory staff.
  9. Maintain a fitness level necessary for instructing and judgmental components of the role.
  10. Coach, mentor, and develop new assistant/apprentice and full instructors.
  11. Complete additional projects as assigned.
Qualifications

Must maintain active certifications as a condition of employment.

Mandatory
  • Swim for Life Instructor (SFLI), YMCA Instructor, or Water Safety Instructor (WSI).
  • National Lifeguard – Pool Option.
  • Bronze Cross (if not NL certified).
  • Intermediate Workplace First Aid (formerly Standard First Aid with CPR-C & AED).
Desirable
  • Airway Management (formerly Oxygen Administration).
  • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).
  • High Five and Inclusion Training.
  • Lifesaving Instructor (LSI).
  • Bronze Examiner (Examiner Course).
Work Schedule
  • Mandatory in-service attendance and professional development.
  • Availability to work early mornings, late evenings, weekends, holidays, and school breaks.
  • Vacation requests during swim sessions are unlikely to be granted.
Compensation

$17.00 per hour plus 4% vacation pay.
