Job summary

Laurentian University’s Institute for Northern Housing Innovation (INHI) invites applications for a Research Intern to support interdisciplinary research and development of sustainable, affordable, and technologically advanced housing solutions for the North.

Working with faculty, students, and partners, you will assist in designing prefabricated assemblies, test automation, data collection and analysis, and knowledge mobilization through workshops and reports.

Qualifications

• Degree in Architecture, Engineering or Computer Science.
• 1–2 years of relevant experience.
• Interest in sustainable housing, prefabrication, low-carbon construction, advanced manufacturing, robotics, and building-performance research.
• Experience with research methods, prototyping, material testing, digital fabrication, data collection, and technical documentation.
• Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently or collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment.
• French and English fluency is an asset.

Responsibilities

• Support the design, development and testing of prefabricated building assemblies.
• Assist in designing and implementing automated construction processes, including robotic systems and CDPR-based workflows.
• Assist in developing machine vision and sensor systems for real-time monitoring and precise placement of building components.
• Conduct research on sustainable housing models, including embodied and operational carbon analysis, bio-based materials, and regional supply chains.
• Collect, analyze, and visualize data from material testing and environmental sensors.
• Contribute to prototyping activities, including digital fabrication, assembly, and iterative design.
• Support community-based and industry-facing demonstration projects.
• Prepare reports, research publications, and presentation materials.
• Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings and knowledge mobilization activities.
