The hours of work will be Monday to Thursday 8am to 12 noon each day.

DUTIES

The Sustainable Energy and Transportation Specialist works closely with the Energy Manager on energy-related projects that result in energy savings/GHG reduction, energy performance improvement on campus and maintain formalized TRU Energy Management System according to ISO 50001 standards. The Sustainable Energy and Transportation Specialist will work closely with Environment and Sustainability and Facilities staff to make sure getting the maximum incentives of ongoing or potential energy projects.

This position will also work closely with the Manager of Sustainability Programs to support transportation-related projects and activities and is responsible for the overall coordination of Transportation Demand Management (TDM) programs and services at TRU. This includes running programs, data collection and management, performance reporting, coordinating audits and investigating new initiatives.

The Sustainable Energy and Transportation Specialist should be familiar with the 2013 TRU Campus Master Plan and TRU’s Campus Strategic Sustainability Plan. They will conduct their duties and responsibilities in accordance with each plan’s mission, goals, and objectives; with special attention given to the energy and transportation-centric aspects of each plan.


MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensures the Energy Manager, Facilities and operational staff (as required) are aware of all energy efficiency and conservation incentive and education programs from utility providers.
  • Develops, evaluates and promotes programs and services related to both TRU Energy Management System and TRU’s Transportation Demand Management Strategy. Ensures the TRU website for both is engaging, up-to-date and effective.
  • Also help the Energy Manager to keep track and monitor TRU’s energy consumption and conduct necessary M&V, energy reporting and internal utility billings.
  • Explores, develops and recommends energy and transportation related projects to internal management including administration of related contracts, timelines and evaluation measures.
  • Implements energy and transportation projects and ensures that incentive programs are applied for, utilized where applicable, and necessary invoices are submitted as required.
  • Helps the Energy Manager complete BC Hydro’s Strategic Energy Management Plan. Helps coordinate/present any applicable employee awareness training.
  • Assists the Energy Manager in any other energy efficiency and conservation related initiatives and projects.
  • Provides assistance to TRU employees and students regarding transportation issues related to the offered programs.
  • Works with marketing staff members and use various means of communication to update the TRU community and the general public on various TDM and Energy related initiatives.
  • Coordinates surveys to internal and external stakeholders involving the TRU strategic sustainability goals related to energy and transportation.
  • Supervises work study and co-op students providing support for the Energy and TDM programs (when applicable).
  • Oversees best practices with utilized hardware and software programs in place to assist with current transportation programming.
  • Coordinates third-party maintenance – both scheduled and unforeseen – for all types of vehicles, including the maintenance of bicycle repair station.
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

  • A bachelor’s degree in engineering, Business, Building/Operations Management or energy-related equivalent level of education


EXPERIENCE:

  • Five (5) years of related work experience in the fields of energy management or energy efficiency and in a sustainability office or department in a public sector environment
  • Experience working in a post-secondary setting including knowledge of procurement procedures, RFP/RFB design and project management
  • Experience working with data base software and creating asset inventories
  • Experience related to energy efficiency (work/volunteer experience)


SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE OR ABILITIES RELATED TO THE JOB

  • Knowledge of energy efficient technologies
  • Experience with financial analyses, budget preparation, budget management and detailed report writing
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fundamental issues related with progressive TDM programs
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to organize events and programs
  • Demonstrated skill in computer applications, particularly Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and desktop applications
  • Ability to work with databases and generate reports
  • Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with staff, students and members of the public
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize and prioritize work while managing multiple diverse and competing priorities to meet deadlines
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License

  • Occasionally visiting mechanical rooms/roof tops which involves:
    • Exposure to extremes of heat, cold, inclement weather, temperature fluctuations
    • Exposure to noise, dust, dirt, fumes, noxious odorous, poor ventilation, restrictive work areas
    • Climbing ladders
  • Ability to lift up to 20 kg
The salary for the above position is determined by the Collective Agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 4879, as it presently exists.
