Job summary

McElhanney seeks a Survey Technologist to join the Lower Mainland team in BC. You will support survey operations with conventional methods and advanced technologies, collaborating with land surveyors, engineers, GIS professionals, and other specialists.

The role offers potential for field- or hybrid-based work, with a strong emphasis on safety, accuracy, and client service. 2–5 years of experience and a Geomatics diploma are preferred.

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Geomatics Engineering Technology or related discipline.
  • 2–5 years of relevant experience or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of survey calculations, geodetic coordinate systems, datums, map projections, and cadastral systems.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, and Trimble Access is an asset.
  • Experience with RPAS systems is an asset.

  • Conduct conventional and GNSS/GPS surveys for legal, topographic, engineering, and construction projects.
  • Perform construction layout and as-built surveys.

The Opportunity

McElhanney is seeking a motivated Survey Technologist to join our team in the Lower Mainland, BC. This is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to build hands‑on experience with a collaborative, multidisciplinary team. In this role, you will work alongside Land Surveyors, Survey Technologists, Civil Engineers, GIS and Geo Spatial Technologists on a wide range of survey projects including legal, topographic, engineering, and construction projects.



You will support survey operations using conventional survey methods using Total stations and GNSS survey equipment as well as advanced technologies, including Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), LiDAR (conventional and SLAM), and bathymetric survey systems.



Depending on your experience, interests, and business needs, this position can be primarily field-based or offer a blend of both field and office responsibilities.



What You’ll Do


In the Field


  • Work as part of a survey field crew or independently, collecting accurate survey data and maintaining detailed field notes and sketches.

  • Conduct conventional and GNSS/GPS surveys for legal, topographic, engineering, and construction projects.

  • Perform construction layout and as-built surveys.

  • Assist with data collection using RPAS, LiDAR, and other survey technologies.

  • Adhere to company safety and quality policies and procedures in all field activities.



In the Office


  • Process and analyze survey data to produce drawings, legal plans, and project deliverables.

  • Download, edit, and manage conventional and GNSS survey data.

  • Interpret survey, engineering, and architectural drawings.

  • Support project coordination, quality control, and client communication.



What You’ll Bring


  • Diploma in Geomatics Engineering Technology or related discipline.

  • 2 to 5 years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Knowledge of survey calculations, geodetic coordinate systems, datums, map projections, and cadastral systems.

  • Working knowledge of how to conduct BC Legal surveys and find survey evidence.

  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D, Trimble Business Center, and Trimble Access is an asset.

  • Experience with RPAS systems and a Basic or Advanced Pilot Certificate is an asset.



Field Requirement


  • Ability to travel and work across western Canada.

  • Able to work outdoors in varying weather, terrain, and remote environments.

  • Able to lift and carry survey equipment.

  • Valid driver's license.

  • Strong commitment to safety and safe work practices.



Professional Skills


  • Strong communication and collaboration, with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.

  • Organized and detail-oriented, with strong time management skills and the ability to prioritize tasks and meet project deadlines.



What Can We Offer You?

The salary range for this position is $70,000 - $95,000 per annum. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s educational, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary/wage range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
