Job summary

McElhanney is seeking a Survey/Geomatics Technician to join our Courtenay team. You will lead a field crew, perform conventional and GPS surveys, and process field data into accurate drawings and legal plans.

The role supports projects on Vancouver Island, with travel as needed. A geomatics diploma and experience with surveying tools are required; RPAS and 3D scanning experience are assets.

Qualifications

• Two-year technical diploma or degree in geomatics with up to 3 years of related experience.
• Experience with Microsurvey, AutoCAD Civil3D, Trimble Access, Leica Infinity and Starnet; RPAS license is a strong asset.
• Experience with 3D scanning equipment is an asset.
• Physically fit, able to lift equipment and work in varied conditions.
• Knowledge of survey and boundary calculations, geodetic coords and map projections.
• Ability to work independently with limited supervision and manage priorities.
• Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
• Strong communication skills and safety adherence.

The Opportunity

McElhanney is currently seeking an experienced and motivated individual to join our team as a Survey/Geomatics Technician in Courtenay. This is a great opportunity for a dedicated individual who is looking to gain hands on surveying experience with a multidisciplinary team.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to work alongside a team of Land Surveyors and Survey Technologists as well as Civil, Geotechnical and Structural Engineers and technologists on a variety of legal, topographic, engineering and construction projects. Within this role, you will primarily provide field survey services using conventional survey methods but will also have the opportunity to work with Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS, a.k.a. drones), LiDAR (statics and mobile, terrestrial and aerial), bathymetric systems, and more, as well as complete office processing and deliverable production.

The successful candidate will primarily support projects in the North Island, with a willingness to travel out of town for work as required. During periods of lower local workload, there may also be opportunities to support major projects in other locations, providing additional project exposure and variety.

This role is designated as a safety-sensitive position and completion of a pre-employment drug & alcohol and fitness for work testing is required.

What You’ll Do

• Lead Field crew and prepare accurate notes, sketches and field data.
• Conduct conventional and GPS field surveys.
• Interpret field data to create accurate survey drawings and legal plans. This will include downloading and editing field data, interpreting field notes and sketches, and processing conventional and GNSS data.
• Interpret Architectural and Engineering drawings for layout and as-built survey purposes.
• Liaising with Project Managers and clients regarding project scope and enquiries.
• Implementing quality assurance on all field returns and office deliverables.

What You’ll Bring

• Two-year technical diploma or degree in geomatics with up to 3 years of previous experience in a similar role, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
• Experience with Microsurvey, AutoCAD Civil3D, Trimble Access, Leica Infinity and Starnet would be a strong asset. Experience with RPAS systems including basic and advanced pilot license is a strong asset.
• Experience with 3D scanning equipment and software is an asset.
• Physically fit, able to lift heavy equipment, willing to work in various environmental conditions with varied terrain, able to work in wildlife populated areas, and willing to work in remote areas for extended periods and varied hours.
• Knowledge of survey and boundary calculation, geodetic coordinate systems and map projections.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision while managing priorities effectively.
• Basic understanding of the BC Land Titles system.
• Strong communication skills.
• Adherence to corporate safety policies and reporting.
• Valid and unrestricted Class 5 driver’s license required.
• Ability to work independently to complete tasks and meet deadlines in a timely manner.

What Can We Offer You?

The salary range for this position is $56,000 - $82,000 per annum. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary/wage range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.
