Job summary

Midwest is seeking a Survey Assistant for its Lethbridge location. The role involves outdoor fieldwork, operating survey equipment under supervision, and supporting Crew Chief with basic tasks such as staking boundaries. A valid driver’s license and willingness to travel are required.

Qualifications

• Valid driver’s license and clean record.
• High School Diploma (Geomatics coursework considered an asset).
• Ability to pass Drug & Alcohol testing as required by client and regulations.
• Experience working outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Experience with OHVs and 1-ton class trucks (F-350 or similar).
• Experience with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel).
• Comfort with navigational tools (GPS units, maps, etc.).
• Experience with survey equipment (GNSS RTK, Total Stations, Levels, UAVs) is an asset.

We are currently looking for a Survey Assistant in our Lethbridge location. Lethbridge is a vibrant city in southern Alberta, located near the Oldman River and celebrated for its sunny climate, coulee landscapes, and rich cultural heritage. The city is home to the iconic Lethbridge Viaduct (High Level Bridge), the largest railway structure of its kind in Canada. Notable attractions include the tranquil Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden, the engaging Galt Museum & Archives, the educational Helen Schuler Nature Centre, and the historic Fort Whoop-Up, a living reconstruction of a 19th-century trading post. Lethbridge also features strong arts and food scenes and is home to Lethbridge College and the University of Lethbridge.

Summary of Responsibilities:

• Follow all Midwest health and safety policies, practices & procedures, with a commitment to contributing to the safe work culture.
• Participate in monthly field safety meetings.
• Able to communicate effectively with the Crew Chief, including asking questions and a willingness to learn about surveymethodologyand techniques.
• Able tooperateall communication and electronic equipment (cell phones, laptops, etc.).
• Able tooperatemotor vehicles, including OHVs (off-highway vehicles) and medium-duty trucks (Ford F-350 or similar).
• Able tooperatesurvey equipment under the supervision of the Crew Chief, including setting up, operation and packing up all survey equipment.
• Able to perform basic survey data collector functions under the supervision of the Crew Chief.
• Able to complete basic survey tasks such as staking and flagging boundaries and searching/digging for survey evidence.
• Maintain a clean and organized work environment, including maintenance of tools, supplies, and vehicles.
• Comply withjurisdictional Commercial Carrier Safety requirements/regulations (training provided by Midwest).
• Utilize company-required checklists and procedures.
• Develop a basic understanding of project related documentation and project workflows.
• Assume a safety lead position should the Crew Chief become injured.
• Perform other duties as assigned by Crew Chief and Field Operations Manager.

• Experience working outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Experience with operating Off Highway Vehicles (OHVs) & 1-ton class trucks (F-350 or similar medium duty truck).
• Experience with basic Microsoft applications, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
• Comfort with the operation and use of navigational and orienteering tools (e.g., handheld GPS units, Google maps, hard-copy paper maps, etc.).
• Experience in a similar role including the use of survey equipment (e.g., GNSS RTK, Total Stations, Levels, UAVs, etc.) is an asset.

Work Environment, Physical Effort & Schedule

The Survey Assistant position works in various outdoor and all-terrain, all-weather environments typically present in Western Canada, and physical exertion may be required daily including, but not limited to:

• Walking on a variety of uneven ground, up to several kilometers (i.e., fields, pasture, construction sites, rugged natural terrain,etc).
• Lifting equipment and supplies between 20-35 kg (50-80 lbs.) and carrying equipment and supplies up to 20 kg (50lbs).
• Operating OHVs (Off-Highway Vehicles) in all weather conditions.
• Utilizing hand tools, such as hammers,sledgehammersand jackhammers to install survey monumentation and markings.

Field based survey positions, including the Survey Assistant position, require availability to travel as required by work assignment. Midwest will be responsible for costs associated with lodging, and the Survey Assistant shall be reimbursed for subsistence costs. The length of work assignments varies based on client requirements, job complexity, and job location.
