Job description

Position: Surgical Care Nurse

In accordance with the Vision, Purpose, and Values, and strategic direction of the Vancouver Island Health Authority (Island Health), patient and staff safety is a priority and a shared responsibility. The continuous improvement of quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position.

As a member of a multidisciplinary healthcare team, the Surgical Care Nurse functions as an experienced, self-directed nurse by assessing, planning, providing, and evaluating nursing care for assigned patients.

Qualifications: Education, Training, and Experience
  • Registration with BC College of Nurses and Midwives as a practicing RN registrant;
  • Post-basic education in surgical/ambulatory care nursing on a unit-specific basis; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and training;
  • Up to two (2) years recent, related experience on a unit-specific basis;
  • Basic Life Support, Level C.

  • Apply nursing process as required and as described in BC College of Nurses and Midwives Standards of Nursing Practice;
  • Demonstrate sound organizational, problem-solving, and teaching skills;
  • Demonstrate sound judgment, observation, and patient assessment skills;
  • Demonstrate tact and empathy;
  • Prioritize and organize patient demands and care needs;
  • Operate related equipment;
  • Remain calm and respond appropriately in stressful and emergency situations;
  • Work as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team;
  • Foster good public relations;
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing;
  • Physically able to perform the duties of the position;
  • Work independently, with limited supervision.
