Job summary

The MindShift Academy is seeking a compassionate Support Worker for a neurodiverse young adult in Toronto. This role involves direct one-on-one support, implementing behavior safety plans, and working closely with families and a multidisciplinary team. Support Worker – Neurodiverse Young Adult (1:1, Contract to Hire)

Location: Toronto, Ontario

Type: 3-Month Contract with Strong Potential for Full-Time

Compensation: $20–$23/hour

Hours: 30–35 hours/week (Monday to Friday, generally 9 AM – 4 PM)

Eligibility: Applicants must be Canadian citizens or permanent residents

About the Role

The MindShift Academy is seeking a compassionate, experienced, and skilled Support Worker for a one-on-one role with a bright, nonverbal neurodiverse young adult. The individual functions at the developmental level of a toddler and may experience serious behavioral meltdowns. The ideal candidate will have strong risk management skills, experience with behavioral interventions, and the ability to prevent and de-escalate crises calmly and effectively.

Who You Are
  • Experienced: Minimum 2 years supporting individuals with developmental disabilities, particularly nonverbal clients or those with complex behaviors.
  • Crisis-Competent: You are confident in handling serious behavioral meltdowns and have practical training in risk management, de-escalation, and behavior prevention strategies.
  • Sensory-Savvy: Knowledgeable in supporting clients with tactile sensitivities and sensory regulation needs.
  • Emotionally Intelligent: Calm, grounded, and patient under pressure, with excellent judgment in high-stress situations.
  • Creative & Playful: Able to design safe, meaningful activities appropriate to the client’s developmental and sensory needs.
  • Professional & Coachable: Follows direction from a multidisciplinary team, receives feedback constructively, and communicates clearly with supervisors.
  • Legally Eligible: Canadian citizen or permanent resident.
What You’ll Do
  • Provide safe and consistent 1:1 support during daily routines, community outings, and skill-building activities.
  • Use proactive behavior support techniques to help prevent emotional dysregulation and manage escalating behaviors with professionalism and calm.
  • Implement and follow individualized behavioral safety plans, including redirection, sensory tools, and crisis intervention protocols if necessary.
  • Adapt activities to align with the client’s sensory, developmental, and behavioral profile.
  • Collaborate closely with family members and The MindShift team to ensure the client’s safety, engagement, and progress.
  • Maintain clear documentation of daily activities, behavioral observations, and incident reporting when applicable.
Required Qualifications
  • Diploma or degree in DSW, Social Work, Psychology, or a related field.
  • CPR/First Aid certification (required); CPI/NVCI, ABA, or similar crisis prevention training (strongly preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience managing serious behavioral challenges and applying structured risk management strategies.
  • Experience supporting clients with sensory processing needs and nonverbal communication styles.
  • Recent Vulnerable Sector Check (completed within the last 6 months or willing to obtain before start date).
  • Access to a car is an asset but not required.
Compensation & Schedule
  • $20–$23/hour, based on experience and qualifications.
  • 30–35 hours/week, Monday to Friday (typically 9 AM – 4 PM).
Contract Details
  • Start Date: Targeting mid-to-late June 2025
  • Initial Term: 3-month contract
  • Path to Permanent: Strong potential for full-time hire based on performance and client fit
