Job description

RCR’s Support Workers provide care to the relatives living in a small home environment. The core goal of the position is to provide relatives with assistance, promoting healing, quality of life, and dignity. Responsibilities include supervision, facilitating activities on-site and during community outings, and providing overall support. The Support Worker works under the leadership of the Program Coordinator within the small home environment. The incumbent exercises the appropriate level of initiative and independent judgement in determining work priorities, work methods to be employed, and action to be taken on unusual matters. The position functions in a manner that is consistent with the mission, vision, values, and policies of RCR.

Position Overview

  • Facilitating on-site programming : client and visitor supervision, workshops / skill-building sessions, accompanying clients to / participating in off-site activities and appointments as required either by driving the house vehicle or by public transportation, other duties as assigned.
  • Case management : client file maintenance, entering progress / case notes, adhering to safety and program protocols.
  • Household management : assisting clients in meal preparation and cleanup; medication management, assisting with / ensuring clients have completed necessary chores and assignments, client adherence to schedules and expectations; responding promptly and effectively to emergency situations including assessing, intervening, and documenting critical incidents, and seeking assistance as needed.
  • Participating as a member of the RCR team : communicating pertinent information to the team, maintaining excellent working relationships with team members and stakeholders, participating in team planning and problem-solving, performing a variety of administrative functions as required by the Program Coordinator and / or Executive Director, attending on-site / remote meetings, training and supervision of volunteers / students.

Education and Experience

  • Grade twelve / equivalent education strongly preferred, a combination of other educational levels and experience will be considered.
  • Minimum one year of recent related professional experience in Manitoba’s addictions / mental health field strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of 2SLGBTQIA+ history, culture, and barriers within public systems, or willingness to learn.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care model of care, or willingness to learn.
  • Knowledge of Turtle Island’s Indigenous history, culture, customs, beliefs, and barriers within public systems, or willingness to learn.
  • Knowledge of Manitoba’s judicial and Child and Family Services (CFS) systems is considered an asset.

Certification / Licensure / Registration

  • Responsible for maintaining and providing proof of registration with the relevant regulatory body if applicable.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driver’s abstract are preferred.
  • Satisfactory criminal record and prior contact check, clear child and elder abuse registry check.
  • First Aid / CPR, Mental Health First Aid ASIST, NVCI, Food Handler Training Certificate, or related / similar certifications are considered an asset.

  • Able to contribute to a culturally-safe environment for staff and relatives.
  • Demonstrated ability in basic computer skills including Google Workspace and ability to adapt easily to cloud-based software.

  • Demonstrated ability in problem-solving, flexibility, and adaptability to changing demands.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate to the relatives, their families, and staff in a friendly and professional manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as with others.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with individuals presenting challenging behaviours or experiencing crisis, to de-escalate and resolve conflict.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under specified time constraints and in accordance with routines, while observing policies and procedures.
  • Proficiency in English required, proficiency in Indigenous languages considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to respect confidentiality including paper, electronic formats and other mediums.
  • Good work and attendance record, ability to pick up shifts when required.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be in good physical and mental health.
  • May encounter aggressive and / or agitated clients / visitors / staff.
  • May be exposed to infectious diseases, blood and body fluids, toxic materials, noise, allergens, physical and emotional stress.
  • May be occasionally required to work extended hours.
  • Will be required to work a variety of shifts including but not limited to days, evenings, overnights, and weekends.
