Sussex Emmaus is looking to recruit a Support Worker to support Companions living and working at Sussex Emmaus

CLOSING DATE: 23 May 2025 LOCATION: Sussex Emmaus, Portslade SALARY: £28,706 (pro rata per annum depending on experience) TYPE: Full-time and part-time role available

Emmaus Sussex is seeking two dedicated Support Workers (one full-time role and one part-time role) to join our vibrant community. In this role, you’ll support our Companions — individuals living and working with us — many of whom have faced significant challenges in their lives.

We are looking for someone with proven experience in providing support to people who have experienced multiple disadvantages.

Reporting to the Community Manager, you’ll bring a positive, motivational attitude and a genuine passion for helping others grow and thrive. You’ll be part of a welcoming, enthusiastic team who are deeply committed to making a real difference every day.

About Sussex Emmaus

Sussex Emmaus is a charity dedicated to supporting individuals who have experienced homelessness. We provide accommodation for up to 58 people, offering a home, tailored support, and the opportunity to gain skills and work opportunities through social enterprises run by the charity. This package of support helps people regain stability, rebuild their confidence, and work towards independence.

At the heart of Sussex Emmaus are our Companions . Companion is the name given to people who live in an Emmaus community and contribute to the social enterprise, where they support themselves and one another.

Sussex Emmaus offers an individual holistic package of support and a tailored development plan to support each companion develop new skills (or build on existing ones) to boost confidence, improve mental and/or physical health and wellbeing, and increase employability.

About the role

As a Support Worker at Emmaus Sussex, you will deliver emotional and practical support to Companions using a person-centred approach, enabling them to live and work confidently within the community. You’ll work within a Strengths-Based Practice model to build resilience, promote fulfilment, and help individuals maximise their skills and independence. Where needed, you will help Companions access external services and create move-on pathways for those ready to transition to independent living.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing and maintaining strong partnerships with local agencies to enhance the support available to Companions.
  • Acting as an advocate, accompanying Companions to formal meetings and appointments as required.
  • Supporting the Community Manager with the referral and admissions process, including completing thorough risk and needs assessments.
  • Ensuring all Companion records are accurately maintained in line with Emmaus policies, procedures, and data protection regulations.
  • Promoting equality, diversity, and respect for all staff, volunteers, visitors, and Companions through your actions and approach.
  • Participating in an on-call rota to provide out-of-hours support, attending the site if necessary to manage critical incidents or emergencies.
