WHAT DOES A SUPPORT WORKER DO?

A great job opportunity, providing support within the community and at our home-based locations. We work with a variety of people with diverse abilities who require assistance to perform activities. You provide the energy, the smiles, and the initiative to help our friends enjoy life as much as possible. Their needs include bathing, preparing meals, feeding, peri care, and assistance with walking, swimming, and anything else that improves their quality of life.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Personal and Medical Care

  • Assist with all personal care needs in a respectful and dignified manner, according to the care plan;
  • Safe and accurate administration of medications, keeping records, and monitoring as needed according to the care plan;
  • Following safety protocols when available and adhering to safe practices at all times;
  • Attend medical appointments with the Person Served when requested;
  • Follow through with all health and medical procedures and/or protocols as outlined in the care plan;
  • Assisting with hygiene needs, including, but not limited to: assisting with bathing, changing, pull ups, brushing teeth, changing clothes, etc.;
  • Assist with meal planning, shopping, meal preparation, feeding, and clean up;
  • Provide healthy meals that take into account the Person Served’s dietary needs, tastes, and preferences;
  • Keeping the home and any other work areas clean and tidy. Doing chores as outlined on the housekeeping checklist.

Behavioural Supports

  • Follow behavioural support plan if available;
  • Facilitate friendships and other relationships, and promote the Person Served’s abilities in the community;
  • Integrate learning into all areas of the Person Served’s life whenever possible;
  • Search out and participate with Person Served in meaningful activities, at home and in the community;
  • Manage any behaviours that may arise while remaining patient and consistent;
  • Using appropriate redirection and/or other appropriate behavioural measures to manage any maladaptive behaviours;
  • Engage with Persons Served in a compassionate and caring manner;
  • Work with Persons Served who communicate physically and/or behaviourally and be able to understand;
  • Be able to effectively and respectfully communicate with Persons Served.

HOURLY RATES (BASED ON DAILY AMOUNT):

  • $26.74 training wage (approx. 60 hours)
  • $28.49 to $32.85 wage range after training complete (based on demonstrated experience and skill)

BENEFITS & RRSP MATCHING:

  • All employees working a minimum of 24 hours per week are eligible for our Extended Health and Dental benefits package;
  • 3 weeks of vacation time for all employees (based on accrual);
  • A voluntary RRSP matching program available to eligible employees.

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS:

  • Employees new to the company must comply with a paid basic training of 60 hours, which is progressive and adapts to the needs of the person

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A minimum 2-year relevant diploma, or equivalent of education/experience working with children and youth with behavioural and other needs.
  • Specific training in behavioural modification, children under 12 years of age with support needs, attachment-based parenting, and relationship-based interventions (Trauma-informed practice).
  • Current and valid Standard First Aid with CPR Level C (or willingness to obtain before end of training period)
  • Exceptional work ethic
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Excellent ability to follow instructions
  • Proven ability to work both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively within a team environment
  • Positive attitude and initiative

  • Reliable, responsible and trustworthy
  • Ability to consistently and reliably commute to the workplace
  • Flexibility to work a variety of shifts, including weekends and overnights

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Criminal Records and Child Welfare screening checks
  • Full driver’s license – Class 5 (ability to drive a minivan)
  • Submission of a clean Driver’s Abstract
  • Have a working cell phone at all times while you are at work. To be used in emergencies and to be able to contact or receive calls or text messages from staff members
