Major Responsibilities:

Reporting to a General Supervisor Parks, the Supervisor's main function is to supervise, plan, and deliver operations and maintenance services in support of all parks and related activities within a geographic area and/or multiple Parks & Ravine assets within the City of Toronto.

  • Supervises the integrated operation and maintenance of parks, ravines, watercourses, and open space within a designated area and/or across multiple parks, including horticulture, turf management, ice rink operations, winter maintenance, general maintenance, managing parks events, and other disciplines.
  • Supervises daily operations of maintenance and cleanup of Ravines & Watercourses.
  • Supervises the daily operation of all assigned staff, including scheduling, work assignment, and review. Recommends vacation and overtime requests for authorization to the General Supervisor.
  • Monitors and evaluates staff performance, approves salary increments, hears grievances, and recommends or implements disciplinary actions when necessary.
  • Implements detailed plans and recommends policies/procedures regarding program-specific requirements.
  • Supervises, motivates, and trains staff, ensuring effective teamwork and high standards of work quality and organizational performance.
  • Directs staff through on-site assessments to ensure practices conform to policies, standards, legislation, and safety regulations.
  • Ensures weekly review of staff work via Quality assurance checks and PMIT application.
  • Investigates conflicts and complaints, implementing actions to resolve issues.
  • Monitors work related to new park development and renovation projects.
  • Communicates with staff across the Division to ensure consistent service delivery.
  • Represents the Division/Branch on project committees and consults with management and community representatives.
  • Collects and analyzes feedback from user groups to assess needs for upgrades and new procedures.
  • Administers assigned budget, controlling expenditures within approved limits.
  • Maintains facilities, fleet, and equipment, overseeing repairs, replacements, and upgrades.
  • Provides input on operational changes based on site evaluations.
  • Acts as a Supervisor under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, ensuring training and safety procedures are in place to foster a safety culture.

Key Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education related to the job or equivalent experience.
  • Significant supervisory experience in parks maintenance, operations, or ravines/watercourses.
  • Experience supervising in diverse, including unionized, environments.
  • Experience planning and organizing for events, permits, and community engagement.
  • Valid Ontario Class "G" driver’s license and ability to obtain a City driver’s permit.
  • Strong conflict resolution skills and ability to de-escalate volatile situations.
  • Ability to inspect facilities and operations, ensuring safety and policy compliance.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team, organize workload, and maintain relationships with various stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of Parks and Recreation policies and core functions.
  • Knowledge of applicable legislations, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Collective Agreements.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong administrative, planning, human resources, and financial skills.
  • Proficiency with office technology and applications.
  • Willingness to work shifts, weekends, overtime, and holidays.
