Job description

Develop and execute the Mayor’s communications strategies. Manage public relations and oversee media interactions crafting messages that convey the Mayor’s policies and initiatives. Handle crisis communication. Coordinate with City’s Strategic Communications and Initiatives Division. This is a contract role starting immediately up to November 13, 2026.

Join our dynamic team as the Communications Strategist for the Mayor, where you will spearhead the strategic development and implementation of communication strategies to amplify the Mayor’s vision, policies, and initiatives across our city. Your role will be pivotal in managing media inquiries, crafting compelling press releases, speeches, and messaging campaigns that resonate with diverse stakeholders. From crisis management to fostering collaborative partnerships with city departments and community leaders, you will ensure our communications are clear, impactful, and aligned with our city’s strategic objectives. Working closely with the City’s Strategic Communications and Initiatives Division, you will drive a narrative of transparency, engagement, and progress that shapes the future of our vibrant community. Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director Legislative Services & City Clerk the Supervisor, Communications will :

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with media representatives and City’s Strategic Communications and Initiatives Division
  • Collaborate with the Chief of Staff to develop the communications strategy for the Mayor’s Office
  • Oversee the Mayor’s entire public communication channels, including proactiveorganizing and managing media events / requests / press conferences, online messaging and social media
  • Manage, provide direction and guidance to the Communications and Operations Advisor
  • Draft internal and external communications materials on behalf of the Mayor, such as speeches / remarks, social media posts, key messages, newsletters, information emails, letters, greetings, and certificates
  • Develop clear, effective, and timely communications tools and templates, such as presentations, speaking notes, news releases, backgrounders and media Q&As
  • Identify emerging trends and potential issues through ongoing scans of the media environment and develops issues management plans
  • Prepare the Mayor for all media interviews and act as spokesperson in the media when required
  • Organize and moderate the Mayor’s press conferences
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Skills and Qualifications

  • University degree or post-graduate diploma in journalism, political science, public relations, or communications
  • Minimum 7-10 years related experience working in government with a proven track record in political or corporate communications, preferably with a focus on media relations and speech writing.
  • Strong understanding of the municipal sector and political environment
  • Detail-oriented with an ability to handle multiple projects / priorities.
  • Works well under pressure
  • Strong issues management, media relations, presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with graphic and digital design an asset.
  • Experience with website development, events management, social media and event photography / videography is a must.

Hourly Rate / Salary : $52.19 to $69.58 (Based on Salary Grade G $94,982 to $126,643)
