Supervisor of Accounting Services
The Opportunity
Working with and reporting to the Assistant Superintendent of Finance Services, Horizon School Division is seeking a dynamic and intuitive individual to provide leadership and to act as a resource for the accounting services department, while providing a strong client centered focus to both internal and external stakeholders.

Key Roles and Responsibilities- Ensures the Division operates in a fiscally responsible manner in accordance with the terms and conditions of any funding received and with adherence to recognized Administrative Procedures and Ministry of Education requirements
- Provides support to the Assistant Superintendent of Finance Services in areas of assigned responsibilities including but not restricted to accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, budget development and monitoring, financial risk management and internal controls
- Assists in the preparation of year-end working papers to support the completion of the annual financial statements and provides support throughout the external audit
- Responsible for month-end processes and preparation of monthly journal entries to allow for the timely and accurate completion of month-end, annual and ad hoc reports as requested by the CFO and Assistant Superintendent of Finance Services
- Preparation of monthly financial statements, ensuring compliance with ministry requirements and public sector accounting standards
- Assist in development and monitoring of the annual operating and capital budgets
- Maintain current knowledge of GAAP, PSAB and Ministry of Education reporting requirements
- Continually monitor the area of Accounting Services and make recommendations regarding continuous improvements in effectiveness and efficiency
- Provide on-going support to school secretaries in reviewing and posting transactions for school-based budgets and ensure compliance with administrative procedures
- Oversight of general ledger accounts and preparation of adjusting journal entries as required
- Assist with any special projects as assigned
Education, Knowledge, Qualifications & Experience- Possesses an Undergraduate Degree in Commerce or Business Administration with a major in Accounting or Finance
- Holding or working towards a professional accounting designation (CPA) would be an asset; an equivalent combination of practical training and experience would be considered
- Three to six years' progressively responsible related experience in financial and management analysis and reporting
- Proficient with Microsoft Excel
- Possesses a strong understanding of accounting principles and practices
- Strong working knowledge of accounts payable, accounts receivable and maintenance of general ledgers
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with demonstrated ability to lead a team in a multidisciplinary environment and apply change management skills
- Experience with ERP systems would be considered an asset
- Experience in the public sector and application of PSAB would be considered an asset
