The role reports to the Director of Neighbourhoods Planning and Design in the Building Great Neighbourhoods Branch and requires leadership in a large, complex organization.

The position offers a hybrid work arrangement with options to work from home and the Edmonton Tower.

Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing with APEGA.
  • Leadership experience in municipal design, construction, or a related field.
  • Ability to work in a large, complex organization.
  • Combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Manage, review, approve, and align design deliverables with City policies, design and construction standards and best practices.
  • Provide technical support to design staff to enable timely, professional decisions.
  • Ensure deliverables are coordinated with internal staff, external partners, and the public.
  • Develop and implement a workforce strategy aligned with maximizing value and efficiency.
  • Manage plans, budgets, and resources to meet client and public expectations.
  • Provide ongoing communication on project progress.
  • Align resources to maximize skills and assets to support projects.
  • Manage, mentor and coach staff to foster a high-performance environment.
  • Respond to Councillor and Public inquiries.
  • Participate in partner management and public engagement activities.

Reporting to the Director of Neighbourhoods Planning and Design in the Building Great Neighbourhoods Branch, the Supervisor of Neighbourhoods Design is ready to manage the design aspects of infrastructure reconstruction and rehabilitation within the City of Edmonton’s mature neighbourhoods, as part of the Neighbourhood Renewal Program.

The Neighbourhood Renewal Program is a building block of a great city, and the investment in reconstructing neighbourhoods enhances their livability and longevity. The mandate of the Program is to provide a fully integrated and holistic approach to planning, designing, and delivery of roads, drainage, street lighting, open spaces, and any other neighbourhood amenities.

What will you do?
  • Manage, review, approve, and align design deliverables with City policies, design and construction standards and best practices, safety requirements, and environmental policies
  • Provide technical support to design staff to enable them in making responsible, timely, and professional decisions
  • Ensure deliverables are appropriately coordinated with internal staff, external partners, and the public
  • Develop and implement a workforce strategy aligned with maximizing value and efficiency of a core internal design group
  • Manage plans, budgets, and resources to effectively utilize skills and resources to meet internal client and public expectations
  • Provide ongoing communication on the progress of projects
  • Align the team’s resources to maximize skills and internal assets to support projects and meet client expectations
  • Manage, mentor and coach staff to foster a high-performance environment
  • Respond to Councillor and Public inquiries
  • Participate in partner management and public engagement activities, including as a spokesperson on behalf of the City when required
  • Embrace and demonstrate the Cultural Commitments of Safe; Helpful; Accountable; Integrated; and Excellent
Qualifications:
  • Knowledge or training and/or education in Engineering, Business Administration, Project Management, Architecture, Landscape Architecture or a related discipline
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing and registered as practicing with APEGA. Applicants in a different Canadian jurisdiction eligible for Inter-Provincial Mobility (IPMA) with APEGA may be considered
  • Leadership experience in municipal design, construction, or a related field, and in a large, complex organization
  • Combinations of education and experience may be considered
Assets:
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or a related certification
  • Master’s degree in a related field is considered an asset
  • Credentials in Planning, Landscape Architecture, Active Transportation, or a related field

Conditions of Employment and Work Environment:
  • 1 permanent, full-time position
  • Hours of Work: 36.9 hours per week, Monday - Friday. This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the 14th Floor, Edmonton Tower
  • Salary (Annually): $123,938.39 - $154,920.88
  • Hire is dependent on a Criminal Information Check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton. There may be a cost associated with this requirement
