Job Summary

Ottawa Public Library (OPL) provides accessible, innovative library and information services throughout the City of Ottawa, meeting the diverse needs of communities through various vehicles and a citizen-centred approach.

You will provide professional library services in areas such as information, reference, readers’ advisory, programs, collection development, bibliographic access, inventory control, systems support, web-based services, staff training, and development. You may have supervisory duties and be assigned to children, youth, and/or adult services, possibly overseeing daily branch operations.

Work is performed within the policies and framework of the Library’s mission, core values, customer experience guidelines, and principles of diversity and inclusion, emphasizing customer service excellence.

Education and Experience

Completion of Master's degree in library and/or information sciences from an accredited library school.

Minimum of 2 years of related experience.

Knowledge
  • Library policies, procedures, circulation, classification, cataloguing, and authority control.
  • Supervisory techniques, collection development, and library operations theories.
  • Responding to inquiries, resolving patron complaints, and current automated library systems.
  • Web development tools, intranet structures, bibliographic searching, reference resources, and desktop applications.
  • Adult training methods, health and safety legislation, and customer service protocols.
Competencies, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to demonstrate core behaviors aligned with the City’s values, leadership competencies, and to meet language proficiency requirements in French and English upon hire.

  • Designated Day 1 Ready language proficiency in French and English.
