Job summary

City of Iqaluit is seeking an experienced Superintendent of General Operations to lead Roads, Fleet, and Building Maintenance within Public Works. You will guide daily operations, budget planning, asset management, and contractor coordination to ensure reliable municipal services for the community.

This role requires five years in municipal operations, strong supervision skills, and knowledge of health and safety, procurement, and project management.

Qualifications

• Post-secondary education in public works, engineering technology, construction, fleet management, or related field.
• Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
• Minimum 5 years of progressive municipal operations or public works experience.
• Experience leading and supervising teams in a municipal/public sector setting.
• Knowledge of maintenance planning, procurement, budgeting, health and safety, and project management.
• Remote/ northern experience and knowledge of Indigenous language assets are a plus.

Superintendent of General Operations

Opportunity Overview

The City of Iqaluit is seeking an experienced Superintendent of General Operations to provide leadership and operational oversight within the Public Works Department. Reporting to the Director of Public Works, this role leads Roads Maintenance, Fleet Maintenance, and Building Maintenance operations while supporting safe, efficient, and reliable municipal service delivery. The Superintendent plays a key role in workforce leadership, operational planning, budgeting, asset management, contractor coordination, procurement support, and emergency response activities that help maintain essential municipal services for the community.

Compensation Snapshot

• Hourly Rate: $75.46 per hour

• Hours of Work: 40 hours per week

• Settlement Allowance: $22,378.25 per annum

• Status: Full-time Permanent

• Union Status: Excluded

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and coordinate Roads Maintenance, Open Spaces, Fleet Maintenance, and Building Maintenance operations.

• Plan, organize, and oversee daily, seasonal, and long-term operational activities to support municipal service delivery.

• Supervise unionized and non-unionized staff, providing leadership, direction, and performance support.

• Manage operational budgets, prepare reports and estimates, and support procurement and tendering processes.

• Coordinate contractors, maintenance programs, and operational projects while ensuring compliance with legislation, policies, safety requirements, and municipal standards.

• Support emergency response activities, service restoration efforts, and after-hours operational requirements when needed.

Qualifications

• Post-secondary education in public works, engineering technology, construction, fleet management, or a related field. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

• Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in municipal operations, public works, maintenance, construction, facilities, fleet, or similar operational environments.

• Experience leading and supervising teams, preferably in a unionized municipal or public sector setting.

• Knowledge of maintenance planning, contractor management, procurement, budgeting, health and safety, and project management.

• Northern or remote experience, asset management, fleet management systems, and ability to communicate in Inuktitut or another Indigenous language are assets.

The successful candidate must provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check and meet all certification requirements at the time of application. This position may require participation in emergency response activities and work in Arctic outdoor conditions.

As per Article 23 of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement, priority will be given to Nunavut Land Claim Beneficiaries who meet the criteria.
