Teck Resources' Trail Operations in Trail, BC is seeking a Superintendent, Integrated Environmental Programs to lead a team of environment professionals and drive strategic environmental initiatives across the site.

The role focuses on air emission reduction, water management, remediation, biodiversity planning, and community engagement with Indigenous partners and regulators, with relocation support for candidates outside Trail region.

Qualifications

  • 10–15 years of progressive leadership experience in heavy industry.
  • Bachelor's degree in a science or engineering field related to environmental management, or equivalent experience.
  • Understanding of Teck Trail Operations or comparable smelting facilities is asset.
  • Proven leadership, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Excellent project management experience leading multiple environmental projects.
  • Technical knowledge of relevant federal and provincial legislation and regulations.
  • Experience delivering regulatory submissions and public-facing materials.
  • Experience working with regulators and Indigenous groups and local communities.

Responsibilities

  • Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to safety and environmental rules.
  • Managing multimillion dollar budgets.
  • Environmental remediation programs under the Contaminated Sites Regulation for areas historically impacted by Trail Operations.
  • Groundwater remediation projects for affected groundwater associated with historical activities at Trail Operations.
  • Implementing the Wide Area Remediation Plan (WARP) which sets out measures to address impacts related to historical air emissions from the smelter for a 25,000 ha Environmental Management Area surrounding the Trail Operations site.
  • Advancing the Lower Columbia Ecosystem Management Program (LCEMP) to address impacts to wildlands in the EMA and support Teck's biodiversity management planning.
  • Representing Teck on the Trail Area Health & Environment Committee and be accountable for delivery of Teck's responsibilities as a partner in Trail Area Health & Environment Program to inform continued reduction of children's lead exposure.
  • Implementing Teck's Aquatic Effects Monitoring Program (AEMP) to evaluate aquatic health of the Lower Columbia River.
  • Developing and implementing strategies to further reduce community exposure to SO2 emissions while considering changing regulatory guidance and business needs.
  • Developing and implementing strategies related to managing the risk for inground water retaining structures and for stormwater management infrastructure.
  • Implementing noise mitigation and monitoring intended to minimize exceedances of nuisance community noise levels

Teck's Trail Operations, located in the community of Trail in British Columbia, is one of the world's largest fully integrated zinc and lead smelting and refining complexes. Located in the beautiful West Kootenay region of southeastern, British Columbia, Trail offers outdoor adventure at your fingertips.

  • This position would offer full relocation support to canidates outside of the Trail region.
Role Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Environment& Lands, theSuperintendent, Environmental Strategy(known internally at Teck as Superintendent, Integrated Environmental Programs)is accountable for leading a team of environment professionals and working collaboratively across our complex industrial site to develop and drive the continuous improvement of environmental strategies. The scope includes air emission reduction strategies, risk reduction water management programs, managing historical on-site and off-site environmental impacts through remediation programs, biodiversity management, aquatic effects monitoring, and supporting work involving Teck's land holdings in the West Kootenays. Developing andmaintainingrelations with the local community, Indigenous representatives, and provincial and federal government agencies is alsoan important elementof this role.

The role works closely with a counterpart Superintendent (also reporting to Manager, Environment & Lands) that is responsible for environmental operations management such as the Environmental Management System, regulatory compliance, operational project support, and operational permitting, monitoring, and reporting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Representing Teck on the Trail Area Health & Environment Committee and be accountable for delivery of Teck's responsibilities as a partner in Trail Area Health & Environment Program to inform continued reduction of children's lead exposure.
  • Implementing Teck's Aquatic Effects Monitoring Program (AEMP) to evaluate aquatic health of the Lower Columbia River
  • Developing and implementing strategies to further reduce community exposure to SO2 emissions while considering changing regulatory guidance and business needs
  • Developing and implementing strategies to further reduce ambient emissions for key metals in the local community with focus on reduction of ambient Lead in fugitive dust and meeting the children's blood lead level target for the area
  • Developing and implementing strategies related to managing the risk for inground water retaining structures and for stormwater management infrastructure
  • Implementing noise mitigation and monitoring intended to minimize exceedances of nuisance community noise levels
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 10-15 years of progressive leadership experience in heavy industry (e.g., smelting and refining, mining operations) and strategic resource management
  • Bachelor's degree in a science or engineering field related to environmental management, or equivalent experience
  • Understanding of Teck Trail Operations or comparable smelting facilities is considered an asset
  • Proven leadership, organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent project management experience with a track record that includes management and/or technical direction of multiple environmental projects.
  • Technical knowledge of relevant federal and provincial legislation and regulations
  • Experienced in delivering high quality regulatory submissions and public-facing materials
  • Experienced in working with regulators and collaborating with Indigenous groups and local communities
Pay Range

Pay Range: $135,000 - $185,000

The actual amount offered is determined based on the successful candidate's relevant experience, skills, and competencies and considers internal equity.
