Job summary

The City of Medicine Hat seeks a Superintendent, Electrical Distribution Operations, to provide hands-on leadership for the Electric Distribution Operations group. Reporting to the Manager, Electric Operations, you will supervise skilled trades staff and collaborate with internal City teams and external partners to ensure safe, reliable electricity delivery.

You will lead planning, maintenance priorities, and outage response while advancing programs through updated codes and technologies.

Qualifications

  • Current Journeyman Power Line Technician certificate.
  • Eight years of operating experience in urban distribution electrical systems.
  • Four years of supervisory experience.
  • A valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's Licence with acceptable driving record.
  • Participation in standby duties as required.
  • Equivalent combination of management-approved education and experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership to the Electric Distribution Operations group and supervise skilled trades staff.
  • Coordinate maintenance, establish priorities, and reinforce health, safety, and environmental expectations.
  • Develop employees and manage operational and labour-relations matters.
  • Contribute to business plans and budgets and lead during major outages or system events.

Help lead the safe, reliable delivery of electricity to the community! As Superintendent, Electric Distribution Operations, you will provide progressive, hands‑on leadership to the Electric Distribution Operations group. Reporting to the Manager, Electric Operations, you will supervise skilled trades staff and work closely with Electric Operations employees, internal City teams, external partners, and customers. This is a key operational leadership position where you will combine technical expertise with strong people leadership, helping your team respond to today's operational needs while preparing the utility for future challenges.

A closer look at the role

Your day will combine people leadership, operational oversight, and forward planning. You will work closely with skilled trades staff to establish priorities, coordinate maintenance, reinforce health, safety, and environmental expectations, and ensure reliable electric distribution services. You will collaborate with internal City teams and external partners, develop employees, manage operational and labour‑relations matters, and contribute to business plans and budgets. During major outages or other system events, you will help lead the response. You will also look beyond immediate priorities, using evolving codes, technologies, and industry practices to improve operational programs and procedures.

What you bring

You are an experienced electrical utility professional who can lead both people and operations in a safety‑critical environment. You bring:

  • Thorough knowledge of the practices, materials, equipment, and operating requirements associated with an urban electric distribution system.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Alberta Electric Utility Code, the Safety Codes Act and other applicable codes, standards, and guidelines, as well as working knowledge of provincial occupational health and safety and environmental legislation.
  • Demonstrated leadership and communication skills, with the ability to engage, mentor, and develop skilled trades employees while maintaining accountability for performance.
  • The ability to build effective working relationships, provide clear operational direction, and align employees' work with broader business objectives.
  • The ability to develop business plans and operating budgets and coordinate maintenance and contingency planning.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft applications, office productivity tools, ERP systems, and other technologies relevant to electric utility operations.
Qualifications
  • A current and valid Journeyman Power Line Technician certificate from a recognized post‑secondary institution.
  • At least eight years of directly related operating experience in an urban distrubtion electrical system.
  • At least four years of experience supervising others, included within the eight years of directly related experience.
  • A valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's Licence with an acceptable driving record.
  • The ability to participate in standby duties as operationally required.
  • An equivalent combination of management‑approved education and experience may be considered.
  • This position has been identified as Safety Sensitive and requires the completion of a satisfactory pre‑employment drug screen, which includes testing for cannabis use.
