Job summary

GS Construction seeks a seasoned Superintendent to lead field operations on underground water, sewer, and drainage projects across the Edmonton area. You will manage crews, coordinate with project teams, and ensure safety and quality on every site.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years in deep underground utility construction with 5+ years in supervision.
  • Expertise in open-cut excavation, benching, trenching, and shoring/trench box systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings and specs.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook; experience with SALUS, B2W or Samsara is a plus.
  • Safety certifications such as CSTS, First Aid/CPR, Ground Disturbance Level II, Confined Space Entry, and LSE are assets.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee installation and replacement of underground water, sewer, and drainage systems, including live connections.
  • Provide on-site leadership directing Foremen and coordinating crews for daily work.
  • Set pace for daily production, monitor progress against schedule and budget.
  • Promote and uphold HSE standards, including confined spaces, fall protection, trench safety and traffic control.
  • Coordinate with traffic control near active roadways and adhere to traffic accommodation plans.
  • Serve as the main link between project management and field teams for clear communications.
  • Identify risks with project managers and implement mitigation to protect safety and schedule.
  • Maintain strong relationships with clients, developers, contractors, vendors and subs.
  • Ensure installations meet design specs and coordinate subcontractors through close-out.

As a Superintendent, you will lead field operations for GS Construction’s deep underground infrastructure projects, serving as the critical link between field crews and the project team. Our work ranges from new infrastructure installation on land development and commercial projects to the rehabilitation and replacement of existing water, sewer, and drainage systems.

In this role you willbe responsible forthe following
  • Deep Utility Construction Oversight – Oversee the installation, upgrade, and replacement of underground water, sewer, and drainage systems, including tie-ins to live systems where projects connect to existing infrastructure. Ensure proper construction methods, using open-cut excavation, benching, or shoring and trench box systems as site conditions require.
  • Field Leadership – Provide on-site leadership by directing and supporting Foremen in managing daily crew operations. Ensure the team is properly resourced, aligned with project goals, and focused on continuous improvement and safety.
  • Production & Schedule Performance – Set the pace for daily production, monitoring progress against schedule and budget and adjusting crews, equipment, or plans to keep work moving efficiently.
  • Safety & Compliance – Promote and uphold HSE standards with a focus on confined space entry, fall protection, trench safety, and traffic control. Work alongside the Safety Advisor during regular site visits to keep crews supported and address any concerns early.
  • Traffic & Public Interface – Where work takes place on active roadways, coordinate with traffic control providers and ensure adherence to traffic accommodation plans and public safety requirements.
  • Project Communication & Coordination – Serve as the primary connection between project management and field teams, ensuring clear communication of project plans, timelines, and objectives.
  • Project Risk & Coordination – Collaborate with project managers to identify potential risks and implement mitigation strategies that maintain safety, quality, and schedule.
  • Stakeholder Relationships – Maintain strong relationships with clients, developers, general contractors, vendors, and subcontractors, addressing concerns and resolving issues promptly to support project success.
  • Quality Assurance & Close-Out – Confirm that installations meet design specifications and are ready for inspection and testing. Coordinate subcontractors through surface work and final acceptance.
Qualifications
  • 10+ years of experience in deep underground utility construction, including 5+ years in a supervisory role.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
  • This is a field-focused leadership role. You’ll spend much of your day on active job sites in all kinds of weather.
  • Work takes place on active construction sites with heavy equipment, uneven terrain, and often live underground utilities and active roadways.
  • Daily travel between project sites across the Edmonton area is required (company vehicle provided).
  • Extended hours may be required during the construction season.
