Job description

Job Purpose:

FCSS will be working with other departments again this year to deliver large quantities of high quality, outdoor programing. Youth leaders are responsible for picking up youth and bringing them to planned events. In the field they need to handle all the logistical details associated with the day (facility fees, lunch, first aid, transport etc.). There will be a heavy focus on physical, outdoor, activities such as canoeing, hiking camping, kayaking, and land skills. Leaders need to be passionate about these activities and be willing to teach youth as well as develop their own skills. We are looking for two classes of leaders.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Handle field logistics for youth programs.
  • Ensure that youth are safe.
  • Handle any behavioural issues on the spot and work with FCSS/Heath for individual, ongoing issues.
  • Work with staff, community members and outside groups to deliver high quality programming.
  • Use, and return equipment such as canoes, kayaks, trucks tents, cooking pots etc.

Requirements (Two streams – Youth and Adults)

Youth (under 19 y/o):

  • Transportation to program locations. Can maybe be picked up by youth van (depending on location).
  • Participating in the program previous years is a strong asset
  • Aptitude / interest in outdoor activities
  • Outgoing positive personality
  • Ability to arrive on time and ready for work
  • Interest in developing leadership skills
  • Proof of enrolment for fall term is a strong asset
  • Vulnerable Sector Records Check

Adults (Over 19 y/o):

  • Drivers Licence Required
  • Experience /education in youth programming, counselling, or other social services related field is a strong asset.
  • Experience with outdoor activities such as canoeing, kayaking, and camping. Instructor certificates are strong assets.
  • Eligible for a Class 4 licence is required.
  • Critical thinking skills. Problem solving and adaptation to new circumstances. Flexibility under pressure.
  • Knowledge of CLFN culture and community structure is required.
  • Interest in developing youth.
  • Vulnerable Sector Records Check

Working Conditions and/or Physical Requirements:

  • Hours of work may include holidays, evenings and weekends. Hours of work will change from shoulder season (Early may to may long weekend) to the main season (May 24- September 1). Overnight trips will be required.
  • Work on the CLAWR will be required.
  • Work is performed in an outdoor environment.
  • Able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Reading, writing and email communication skills required.

Salary:

Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
