About Us

The Geoscience and Mines Branch of the Department of Natural Resources delivers leadership in the management and responsible development of the Province’s mineral resource assets along with scientific support of public health and safety through regional mapping and hazard mapping programs. Within the Branch, the Geological Survey Division includes a team of expert geoscientists who are responsible for delivering high quality, timely geoscience data, information, services, and support to a wide range of stakeholders, including all levels of government, industry, academia, and the public.

About Our Opportunity

We are looking for University or College students to assist with projects related to programs in the Geological Survey Division.

Qualifications and Experience

You must be a full-time university or college student in the field of geoscience, GIS, or related, returning to study in the fall.

You demonstrate strong organizational and communication skills and problem-solving ability. You will be familiar with using a personal computer with standard office software for applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and email.

Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge or experience that specifically aligns with one of the positions available.

GIS Summer Student (2 positions – office based):

Join the Geological Survey Division team for a summer student role focused on advancing mineral potential modeling and geoscience dataset preparation, analysis, and presentation. This position offers hands-on experience in applying Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to real-world geological projects.

This role requires students that:

  • Are enrolled in a program related to GIS, geoscience, or a related field.
  • Have some experience in GIS software, specifically ESRI’s ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Online.
  • Have some familiarity with ESRI’s web and mobile applications (i.e. Experience Builder, Survey123, Field Maps)
  • Have strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
Geoscience Field Assistant (4 positions – a combination of field and office work):

Join the Geological Survey Division for a summer student role supporting field-based geoscience projects. As a Geoscience Field Assistant, you will play a key role in collecting geological samples, assisting with field work, and processing data back in the office. This position offers hands-on experience in fieldwork and provides valuable exposure to applied geoscience research. Field work could include traversing rugged terrain, working in variable weather conditions, and carrying a backpack with equipment up to approximately 25kg/55lbs.

This role requires students that:

  • Are currently enrolled in a geoscience, earth sciences, or related degree or diploma program.
  • Have a willingness to work in outdoor field environments, sometimes in remote locations and overnight.
  • Have some familiarity with geological sampling methods and field equipment (e.g., GPS, rock hammers, field notebooks).
  • Have strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Have an ability to work both independently and as part of a team in field and office settings.
  • Have a valid NS Class 5 Drivers License or equivalent.

Experience in GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS) and basic data analysis techniques would be an asset.

We will assess the above qualifications using one or more of the following tools: written examination, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Additional Information

These are STUDENT employment opportunities available with an estimated start date of May 19, 2025 and end date of September 1, 2025.

Please note: There are currently 6 positions within the Geological Survey Division, all located in Halifax.

Field employees are expected to provide their own safety boots. Field positions require a high degree of physical fitness; i.e. Carrying 55lb backpacks/equipment for long periods of time over rugged terrain and in-all weather conditions for 4-5 days a week.

Salary Range: $15.73- $29.69Hourly
