Description

The Ottawa Sports Pages is currently seeking to hire a Sports Journalist this summer to lead our Ottawa at the Canada Games coverage. This position is offered as part of the Canada Summer Jobs program. The daily work hours are flexible, although the selected candidate should be prepared and available for a heavier commitment before/during the 2025 Canada Summer Games (Aug. 8-25). Preference will be given to applicants already residing in Ottawa, or who are able to provide onsite coverage of the Canada Games in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Dates of Employment:

About our organization: The Ottawa Community Sport Media Team is a not-for-profit organization devoted to shining a light on Ottawa’s amateur sports scene through our local sports news publication, and to provide free sports opportunities in conjunction with our partner sports groups to low-income children and youth. The Ottawa Sports Pages covers high school, university, community and elite amateur sport. Our motivation is to recognize the achievements of Ottawa’s amateur sports community, which are almost always overlooked by other media sources. We share stories on our website and through our email newsletter and social media. Visit the CAMPS Project online at: http://ottawasportscamps.ca/about-us/ About the position: The Sports Journalist will create content for all of the Ottawa Sports Pages’ platforms: website, newsletter and social media. This summer’s position will be heavily centred on covering Ottawa’s involvement in the St. John’s 2025 Canada Summer Games, including our pre-Games athlete profiles and Ottawa at the Canada Games daily newsletters during the Games. The Sports Journalist will receive assignments from the Sports Pages’ Editor. Duties will include:
  • Composing features on Ottawa participants in advance of the Canada Summer Games
  • Coordinating interviews before, during and after Games
  • Maintaining a schedule of Ottawa athletes’ competitions
  • Assist in developing coverage plans for daily newsletters during Games
  • Following Ottawa athletes’ competitions at the Games (or attending events if based in St. John’s)
  • Monitoring local participants’ social media posts
  • Posting updates to Ottawa Sports Pages website & social media
  • Creating daily previews/recaps for digital avenues
  • Design & formatting of mailerlite newsletter
  • Taking & editing photos or videos as needed
  • Creating promotional content for CAMPS Project partner organizations
  • Covering local sports events in person or Ottawa athletes competing out of town
The Sports Journalist will be based at their home/remote office, with supervision meetings conducted by video call, phone or in-person, along with frequent contact by e-mail.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following criteria to be eligible to participate in the Canada Summer Jobs program:
  • be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
  • be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.
The successful candidate will:
  • Have journalistic experience and a knowledge of professional writing style
  • Be a passionate storyteller with an interest and knowledge of sports
  • Be personable and confident in interacting with sources
  • Be resourceful and have the drive to track down what’s needed for stories in an amateur sport setting
  • Be well-organized and capable of managing logistics effectively
  • Be able to handle many assignments at once and meet all deadlines
  • Have the ability to shoot photos & video
  • Have excellent computer skills
  • Experience in post-secondary journalism program (or related field) and/or with student press are definite assets


Phone interviews for select candidates are planned for June 5. Finalists will be asked to complete a story assignment – for which they will be paid on a freelance basis – the following week, to be published in the Ottawa Sports Pages’ High School Best series on top local graduating student-athletes.
