Job description

The swiya of the shíshálh people lies between Queens Reach in Jervis Inlet and Howe Sound on the south coast of British Columbia. Historically, there were four main settlements at kalpilin (Pender Harbour), ts’unay (Deserted Bay), xenichen (Jervis Inlet), and tewankw near Porpoise Bay. shíshálh Nation is committed to innovation in program and service delivery designed to assist our members and community to achieve greater independence, wellness, and self-sufficiency. Foundational to our shared work is the protection, promotion, and practice of shíshálh culture, language, and laws within our swiya.

The position of Summer Fun Assistant is an opportunity to connect with the Nation’s children (ages 5 - 11) in a recreational and educational manner and provide positive mentorship to them. This position will be under the management of the Wellness Centre Manager, the Wellness Centre Program Supervisor, and the general supervision of the Child Program Coordinator and other program leads. The Summer Fun Program Assistant will serve as a caring person in the child’s life and will make themselves available to listen, support, and engage with children in a healthy manner.

The position is from June 23, 2025 – August 29, 2025. Hours are from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm (Monday – Friday).

The Candidate:
  • Provide direct service programming to children in the Summer Fun program.
  • Work alongside Wellness Centre staff to deliver the activities offered to children in the Summer Fun program.
  • Support to ensure supplies and gear for the Summer Fun program are organized for each activity.
  • Be a caring mentor to the children in summer programming, which means listening to their needs, supporting them to complete activities, and ensuring safety measures are followed.
  • Communicate with the Wellness Centre and Education teams about any feedback, concerns, or requests for support every week.
  • Attend team meetings as requested.
  • Attend training as it relates to the position.
  • Perform all other tasks within the scope of the position.

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities:

  • Minimum age requirement at the time of intake: 15 years old.
  • Must be willing and able to pass a criminal record check.
  • First Aid Certification is an asset, but will be provided.
  • Experience working with children in a recreation or education setting is an asset.
  • Must be available for work between Monday and Friday.
