Grain Millers in Yorkton, Saskatchewan is seeking a Summer Field Representative to join our procurement team during the 2027 field season. You will support crop tours, scouting, and reporting to the Procurement and Crop Sciences teams while gaining exposure to grain buying and the end-to-end supply chain.

The role requires agronomic coursework, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to travel outside Canada.

Qualifications

  • Candidate has an agronomic background and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in agronomy or agriculture.
  • Proficient in basic computer skills including Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and professional presence when communicating with diverse stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct oat crop scouting, monitoring, and reporting to the Procurement Manager weekly.
  • Travel to other provinces and the US to support crop scouting and related needs.
  • Analyze market trends and provide insights for purchases, sales, processing, and transportation contracts.
  • Provide exceptional customer service and create reports on crop conditions and agronomic issues.
  • Support Crop Specialists on ongoing projects and participate in crop sampling and grading exposure.

Grain Millers is one of North America's premier Oat Milling companies that supplies customers across Canada, U.S.A and Worldwide. We employ a summer student yearly to join our procurement team and engage with our suppliers. This individual will have the opportunity to work under the mentorship of industry experts while learning more about the milling and food production side of both conventional and organic agriculture.

Contract Length:

Traditionally runs May 1st, 2027, to August 30th, 2027, with flexibility to accommodate academic calendars.

The Summer Field Representative conducts crop tours which will include scouting, monitoring, assessing, and providing reports daily and weekly to the Procurement and Crop Sciences teams. The Summer Field Representative may also be exposed to some aspects of grain buying from purchase to delivery. The role will work to build strong working relationships with producers, customers, and external partners through crop tours, industry field days, and other networking opportunities. This position requires the individual to be a team player who provides field information and insight to the Procurement Manager, Procurement Merchant, US (United States) Procurement Group, Director of Crop Sciences, co-workers, and senior management

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Crop Scouting:
  • Oat crop scouting, monitoring, assessing, and reporting to the Procurement Manager on a weekly basis.
  • Will travel to other provinces, as well as the US, to provide support to the Procurement and Crop Sciences teams for crop scouting or miscellaneous business needs.
  • Utilizes statistics along with personal observations to assess crop conditions and accurately report current conditions and projected potentials.
Business Development
  • Gains a basic understanding of technical and product knowledge.
  • Updates and maintains information in our supplier and customer database.
  • Analyzes market trends and opportunities.
  • Exposure to and overview of decision process as it relates to establishing, analyzing, reviewing, and managing of purchases, sales, processing, and transportation contracts.
Miscellaneous Duties
  • Provides excellent customer service.
  • Create reports including crop conditions, agronomic problems and/or potential variances
  • Aiding Crop Specialists with ongoing Crop Science-related projects
  • Exposure to grain sampling and grading processes with Grain Receiving staff
  • Performs all other miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • The ideal candidate has an Agronomic background and is pursuing a Bachelors degree in Agronomy or Agriculture.
  • Basic knowledge in field crop agronomy and western Canadian agriculture with an interest in crop development
  • Grain marketing knowledge is considered beneficial but not a requirement.
  • Previous crop scouting, farming, or general agriculture experience will be considered an asset.
  • Proficient in basic computer skills including - Microsoft Office (Excel, word, and outlook).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills along with professional presence to communicate with a diverse customer, colleague, and vendor population on fields, at plants, and customer sites.
  • Must hold a valid Class 5 driver's license.
  • Must be able to travel outside of Canada as required.

The standard work week will be Monday through Friday when in office with occasional weekend work as well. During the peak season – flexibility is expected due to event planning, farmer availability and weather-related issues. Grain Millers will compensate for all travel-related expenses.
