Summer Camp Counselor

The Rooms is an innovative, culturally relevant institution that represents and showcases Newfoundland and Labrador to itself and to the world, and brings the wider world to its doorstep. It is home to the province's archives, art gallery, and museum.

Two positions available from June 9, 2025 – August 29, 2025 (12 weeks).

Under the direction of the Education and Public Programming Supervisor with support from the Education and Public Programming staff, the camp counselor will be responsible for creating a summer camp program based on themes from The Rooms current exhibitions and collections for children ages 5-12 years.

The camp counselor will be responsible for the supervision, instruction and delivery of six (6) summer camp weeks at The Rooms. Responsibilities include program planning, delivery, coordination of daily operations, guidance and leadership of the camp, and ensuring the general safety of the camp participants.

Duties will include :

  • Developing games and activities
  • Setting up and breaking down camp daily
  • Preparing written program content
  • Preparing supply and materials list
  • Communicating with staff, camp participants, parents, and caretakers

The ideal candidate for this position is someone who is excited by education and learning, has a high level of creativity and flexibility. They should be at least one year into a post-secondary degree in one of the following fields of study : Education, Museum Studies, Early Childhood Education, Folklore, Visual or Performing Art, History, or a related field. Previous experience working with children in formal learning environments or camp settings would be an asset. Knowledge of Newfoundland and Labrador art, culture, history, or natural history would be highly valued. Some training will be provided.

The student should possess excellent oral and written communication, organizational, computer, and time management skills and be detail-oriented. They should be willing to speak with visitors and act professionally at all times, with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships while working independently and in a team environment.

The successful candidate will be expected to work Monday – Friday from 8 : 30 am – 4 : 30 pm or 9 am – 5 pm. A Certificate of Conduct as well as a Vulnerable Sector Check screening from a law-enforcement organization (i.e., The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary) will be required.

The candidate must fulfill the requirements of the Young Canada Works program :

  • Are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible).
  • Are legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Will be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment.
  • Are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment.
  • Will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) during the Young Canada Works (YCW) work assignment.
  • Have been a full-time high school, college, CEGEP or university student (as defined by their educational institution) in the semester preceding the YCW work assignment.
  • Intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the YCW work assignment.
