Job summary

Aecon Group is seeking a Substation Civil Supervisor in Alberta to lead on-site civil works for complex utility projects. You will oversee earthworks, trenching, duct banks and concrete foundations, while coordinating with multiple teams and client representatives to ensure safety, quality and schedule adherence.

The role requires 5+ years of field experience in civil construction, with preference for HV substation exposure and strong drawing interpretation skills.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of on-site construction experience on civil/industrial projects including trench work and underground utilities.
  • High-voltage substation experience is an asset.
  • Ability to read and interpret shop drawings and specifications.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in bid reviews to verify estimates and constructability.
  • Lead field execution of civil scopes with emphasis on earthworks, trenching and duct bank installations.
  • Review IFC/shop drawings and specifications to ensure accurate execution.
  • Oversee civil activities ensuring compliance with project specs and safety.
  • Monitor concrete and soils testing and take corrective actions as needed.
  • Develop and enforce project safety programs with EHS partners.
  • Coordinate with PMO, Quality, Design, Labour Relations and Project Controls.
  • Interface with client representatives and provide routine updates.

Reporting to the Construction Manager, the Substation Civil Supervisor is responsible for ensuring that projects are completed on schedule, in compliance with the contracts and the job cost estimates and all the work is completed safely to acceptable standards of quality and workmanship.

What You'll Do Here:
  • Participate in bid review processes to verify estimated production, constructability, and quantities
  • Lead field execution of civil scopes with a strong emphasis on concrete works, earthworks, and underground utilities, trenching, and duct bank installations
  • Review and interpret shop drawings, IFC drawings, rebar drawings, and specifications to ensure work is executed accurately
  • Oversee and coordinate civil work activities, ensuring compliance with project specifications and quality standards and any interfaces with high‑voltage substation environments
  • Monitor and interpret concrete and soils testing (e.g., slump, air content, compressive strength results, compaction testing) and take corrective action as required
  • Work with EHS representatives to create and enforce project/site-specific safety programs and policies
  • Maintain a positive project culture, supporting team engagement and performance through regular communication and mentorship
  • Act as the construction lead in collaboration with PMO, Quality, Design, Labour Relations, and Project Controls teams for project setup and execution
  • Interface professionally with client representatives, providing routine updates and addressing field-related concerns
  • Develop and manage detailed construction and look-ahead schedules, ensuring labour, equipment, and materials are aligned with project needs
  • Identify project risks and collaborate with project teams on mitigation strategies
  • Manage scope changes and support change management processes related to schedule, materials, and subcontractors
  • Coordinate with subcontractors, union representatives, and regulatory bodies to ensure seamless execution of work
  • Foster an inclusive work environment that promotes diversity, equity, and belonging
What You Bring to the Team:
  • Minimum 5+ years of on‑site construction experience, including leadership of crews on civil or industrial projects involving trench work, duct bank work, and underground utilities
  • Strong experience in industrial construction environments, particularly with civil scopes such as earthworks, underground utilities, and concrete foundations and duct bank installations
  • High‑voltage substation experience is considered an asset, especially exposure to civil interfaces within energized or restricted zones
  • Concrete experience is considered a strong asset and preferred, including exposure to placing, finishing, curing, and quality control processes
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret shop drawings, rebar drawings, and construction specifications
  • Working knowledge of concrete & soils testing procedures, standards, and interpretation of test results
  • Applicable technical training through trade certification or post-secondary education in construction, civil engineering, or related discipline
  • Proven leadership experience managing trade and/or non-trade teams in a construction environment
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to coordinate multiple work fronts in a fast‑paced, complex project setting
  • High level of professionalism when working with internal teams, clients, and external stakeholders
  • Commitment to promoting safety, quality, and an inclusive workplace culture

The expected pay range for this role is $95,000 - $145,000 per year

Individual pay is determined based on several factors such as work location, education, experience and unique skills.
