To support our growth, WSP seeks a Substation Physical Lead Engineer to join our National Electrical Team in Vancouver BC or Victoria BC.

The Substation Physical Engineer acts as a client-facing engineer on high-voltage electric substation design projects, applying codes and standards to produce physical arrangements, plan and elevation views, grounding analysis, layouts, cable plans, calculations for station service and batteries, equipment specifications, and construction documents. They coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to meet project milestones. WSP’s team is dedicated to providing high-level professional services.

What you can expect to do here:

  • Take technical ownership of high voltage (34.5kV – 735kV) substation designs, including:

  • Develop General Arrangements, Plan and Elevation Views, Grounding, Cable Plans, Equipment Specifications, Design Calculations, Bill of Materials, and Construction Documentation;

  • Perform studies such as Grounding, Lightning, AC/DC calculations, and Fault Stress Analysis;

  • Provide support for technical, procurement, construction, and coordination activities;

  • Collaborate with Physical Designers to develop drawings;

  • Coordinate with various project team members, including transmission, distribution, civil, geotechnical engineers, and surveyors;

  • Identify client interests and act as a technical specialist in system protection and communication;

  • Lead client technical review meetings;

  • Participate in feasibility studies and proposal development;

  • Conduct site visits and ensure project support;

  • Adhere to ethical standards and company policies;

  • Perform other duties as needed.

What you’ll bring to WSP:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering;

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng) license;

  • Over 10 years of relevant experience in high-voltage substation design;

  • Experience with voltages up to 735 kV;

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD or Bentley MicroStation;

  • Proficiency with CDEGS, WinIGS, or similar for lightning and grounding studies;

  • Knowledge of mechanical forces and thermal effects of fault currents;

  • Understanding of outage sequences, constructability, operation, and maintenance;

  • Experience in proposal writing and project estimating;

  • Knowledge of scheduling and project controls;

  • Strong industry and technology awareness;

  • Familiarity with NEC and National Electrical Safety Code;

  • Willingness to travel occasionally.

Compensation

Salary range (BC): $105,800 - $171,600. The final salary may vary based on education, experience, skills, and organizational needs. The range is subject to change.
