Hours:

Monday – Friday, 35 hours/week

Home Campus:

Fennell (hybrid work arrangements available)

Rate of Pay:

Payband I (Start Rate: $ per hour, plus 8% in lieu of vacation and benefits)

Reporting to the Manager, Student Success Advising & Retention, the Student Success Advisor (SSA) is a dynamic, energetic, and enthusiastic individual who enhances Mohawk College’s Vision, Mission, Values, and Strategic Priorities by:

  1. Offering academic and personal advising to students grounded in developmental, proactive, and lifecycle approaches;
  2. Participating actively in college retention and student success initiatives;
  3. Completing administrative, data-tracking, and reporting duties in support of student success.

As a vital link between Student Services and the Academic Schools, the SSA also provides support to the Associate Dean(s) (or Manager) in the program areas they are assigned to provide advising services. The SSA actively participates as a team member in meetings and daily operations of both Student Services and their assigned Academic Schools/Programs.

As the first point of contact for students in their respective Academic Programs or target populations, the SSA must be able to respond to, investigate, and resolve inquiries from students, staff, faculty, and other departments.

What you’ll be doing :

The duties of this position include, but are not limited to :

  • Advising students via individual, group, online, social media, and presentation formats.
  • Supporting students and colleagues; knowing and using referral sources and exhibiting referral skills.
  • Implementing outreach strategies for students deemed ‘at-risk’ in cooperation with staff and faculty.
  • Conducting student success activities to promote retention, such as following up with students who do not attend class or are at-risk of leaving early.
  • Listening to students’ concerns, assessing issues, and making appropriate referrals (counselling, accessible learning services, faculty, peer tutors, etc.).
  • Using college information systems to investigate problems and advocate for students.
  • Supporting transition and orientation activities to ensure smooth college transition.
  • Answering inquiries about college programs and services related to student success.
  • Preparing and delivering presentations on college services and programs.
  • Tracking and reporting data on student retention and success.

Other duties as assigned.

What you’ll bring to the role :
  • Minimum educational requirement: Bachelor of Education OR a three-year post-secondary diploma/degree plus a relevant certificate or professional designation.
  • Preference for candidates with a Master’s Degree in Education, Student Affairs, or related fields.
  • At least 3 years of practical advising experience in a post-secondary setting, with knowledge in supporting students with disabilities.
  • Understanding of student development theories, advising practices, academic processes, equity and diversity, confidentiality, and effective communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, virtual platforms, and ability to learn new software.
