Position SummaryThe Student Success Advisor addresses challenges faced by students while promoting their engagement and success throughout their post-secondary education with the Western Campuses, as well as for regional students, distance education students, international students, and domestic students. The Student Success Advisor plays a critical role in student retention by guiding and advising students on their academic goals, navigating internal processes, and connecting them with various college services. Responsibilities include providing academic advisement, delivering workshops, making appropriate referrals to other college departments and service areas, and participating in retention and graduation activities. The Advisor will create academic workshops and related activities to meet the needs of students and community partners, aiming to increase awareness and participation in post-secondary pathways. The Advisor is also responsible for gathering and analyzing data on all activities, ensuring timely submission of this information to meet Ontario’s reporting requirements, and assisting with Ministry reports as needed. Acting as a bridge between student supports and academics, the Advisor maintains strong connections with internal departments and external partners. Key initiatives include leading Student Orientation, organizing workshops and seminars to boost student engagement and success, coordinating outreach programs to enhance retention, and developing academic support strategies. The Advisor facilitates collaboration between faculty and student services to address academic and personal challenges, monitors student progress, and provides individualized support. The role involves working closely with various stakeholders to foster a supportive and inclusive learning environment. Additionally, the Advisor provides academic advisement using defined tools and systems, develops expertise in the assigned Academic School’s programming, liaises with Program Coordinators, Faculty, and School Staff, and offers outreach services to students at risk.

Experience
Typical number of years of experience, in addition to the necessary education level, required to perform the responsibilities of the positionMinimum of five (5) years
Type of ExperienceExperience in Academic Advising: Proven track record in providing academic advisement and support to students, including guiding them through application, registration, and academic challenges. Experience in using internal systems such as DegreeWorks, Banner, Cognito, Cognos.
Event and Workshop Coordination: Experience in planning and implementing orientation programs, workshops, and special events tailored to diverse student populations.
Data Management and Reporting: Proficiency in gathering, analyzing, and reporting statistical data, including experience with tracking programs and preparing reports related to performance targets and outcomes.
Communication Skills: Strong ability to prepare clear and effective reports, presentations, and communications, and to liaise with various college departments and external partners.
Planning: Experience in researching and implementing retention and success strategies based on data-driven insights and best practices.
Student Support: Demonstrated ability to provide targeted support to at-risk, mature, international, domestic, and indigenous students fostering engagement and success.
Team Collaboration: Experience participating in team meetings, sharing best practices, and contributing to collaborative efforts to improve student retention and success.
