The Student Success Advisor position combines generalist advising with public education to support students’ academic and career success, and overall wellness. Working closely with Student Life & Learning (Career Services, Learning Services, Student Accessibility Services, and Student Housing) and other departments, the Student Success Advisor provides individual advising for students looking for help with their academic progress and future career plans, coaching them on effective ways to navigate post-secondary education. In addition, they work with the above areas as well as Campus Wellness to develop and facilitate workshops and create multi-platform informational and promotional material covering a range of topics, from academic strategies and career planning skills, to mental health and gender based violence prevention.
Responsibilities
- Provide general student advising in CUE’s Student Success Centre.
- Offer ongoing follow-up support for students requiring long-term assistance, ensuring continuity of care
- Plan and facilitate educational workshops to support a holistic approach to academic success and wellbeing.
- Participate in CUE’s mental health response team.
- Develop and distribute Student Life & Learning promotion resources and marketing/communication materials.
- Develop & execute multi-media social marketing campaigns. Collaborate with stakeholders across CUE and contribute to CUE’s efforts to support the learning and wellbeing of CUE students.
- Collaborating with the Student Life team and other areas, developing positive internal relationships with staff and faculty
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services, Education, or related field,(e.g. Social Work, Psychology), with a minimum 3 years of related work experience; an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Minimum 2 years experience providing student services at post-secondary institutions
- Demonstrated ability to work with personal information within privacy legislation and university policies.
- A student-first approach to student support, with strong interpersonal, written communication, advising and coaching skills
- Able to use a variety of advising and/or coaching approaches to meet students’ needs and goals.
- Strong understanding of the post-secondary educational context, including common policies and procedures, degree programs and their potential career outcomes, and the skills and resources that students utilise to successfully transition into and complete their studies.
- Capable of educating students on soft skills, such as self-advocacy and communication.
- Presentation and workshop facilitation skills.
- Skill in using social media and creating effective promotional/educational material.
- Intercultural competency and an ability to support students from a diverse range of backgrounds.
- Excellent judgment and decision-making skills, with the ability to work independently.
- Ability to manage multiple projects/priorities while working in a public-facing space.
- Proficiency with Google Email and Apps, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and familiarity with educational technologies, with an aptitude to learn other software as required.
- Mental Health First Aid and ASIST are preferred (will be provided if needed).
- An enthusiastic team player ready to collaborate with staff, faculty, and our Campus Life team to provide exceptional student service.
- Satisfactory Criminal Records Check results
