Under the leadership of the Chief Investment Officer, the Total Portfolio Management Group provides a holistic lens across the OMERS investment portfolio, with responsibility for asset allocation, currency, liquidity management and economic research at the total portfolio level. The Total Portfolio Management group works closely with the broader investment teams and partners to integrate best-in-class thinking across OMERS to support balance sheet growth.

As a member of the Portfolio Construction group, the student will contribute to the team’s mission of improving OMERS’ ability to meet its pension promise by supporting better, more informed investment decisions regarding regional exposures, asset classes, sectors and other characteristics at a total portfolio level. You will contribute in a variety of ways to TPM strategies, methodologies, and decisions, which will impact numerous aspects of the Plan investment portfolio.

As a member of this team, you will be responsible for:

  • Creating clear, concise presentations that communicate ideas in a simple, visually appealing way
  • Working with team members to provide analysis related to overall portfolio construction, liquidity, and foreign currency management
  • Enhancing and supporting automation, data management, visualization, and analytics to improve the group’s tool set and reporting
  • Support web development and/or database-linked tools to improve dynamic modeling of Plan metrics and investment scenarios
  • Apply quantitative methods and/or fundamental research to generate portfolio and market insights
  • Ad-hoc projects and research as required

To succeed in this role, you bring:

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in Finance, Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Science, or related field
  • Industry interest in investments or capital markets
  • Strong analytical skills with some exposure to programming (python, SQL and working with large data sets) would be considered an asset
  • Good understanding of Microsoft Office (specifically Excel and PowerPoint) and Bloomberg
  • Experience articulating complex analysis into simple language for senior leaders
  • A passion for discussing, debating, and implementing investment strategies
  • Ability to contribute to and foster a collegial and creative team culture
  • Intellectual curiosity and a firm commitment to continually learn
  • Drive, self-motivation, and the ability to take initiative
  • A high attention to detail that complements your ability to see the big picture
  • Humility and self-awareness, you value feedback, and invite and integrate different perspectives
  • The ability to prioritize competing tasks while delivering high-quality products within deadlines
  • Experience producing clear, logical, and convincing arguments and explaining complex ideas simply
