Job summary

The Town of Riverview is seeking two students for the Recreation Programmer role in the Parks, Recreation & Community Relations Department, from September 2026 to December 2026, with possible extension to April 2027. The position focuses on planning and leading fall/winter outdoor educational programming and workshops.

Responsibilities include coordinating activities, building partnerships, supervising participants (including snowshoeing), and maintaining safety and documentation.

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a part-time or full-time academic program.
  • Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening.
  • Certification in Workplace CPR/First Aid.
  • Familiarity with year-round outdoor recreation activities is an asset.

Student Outdoor Recreation Programmer - Fall / Winter 2026

The Town of Riverview is seeking to hire Two candidates for the student position of Recreation Programmer with the Department of Parks, Recreation & Community Relation for the month September 2026 to end of December 2026, (with the possibility of extension until April 2027)

The selected candidates will be responsible for organizing, scheduling, implementation and evaluation of activities related to fall and winter recreation programming. Their primary responsibility is developing and leading outdoor educational programming and workshops.

Part I - Characteristic Duties / Responsibilities
  • Assist and lead in the development of community outdoor educational programming and workshops designed to support intergenerational learning, encourage citizens to connect with nature and use active transportation.
  • Identify and build partnerships with local interest groups, individuals and organizations within the active, outdoor recreation and environmental science sector.
  • Lead program planning, offering creative and unique ideas for outdoor recreation activities to engage all ages; adapt activities to meet the needs of all participants.
  • Ensure all forms and reports including incident/accident reports, program planning forms, program evaluations and supply requisition forms are completed accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Organize and operate all projects within budgeted funds.
  • Supervise and instruct program participants throughout all outdoor recreation activities, including, but not limited to, snowshoeing. Ensure all activities are carried out safely.
  • Foster positive interactions between staff, volunteers, program participants and resolve disputes.
  • Ensure the Community Recreation Coordinator is informed immediately of any major concerns.
  • Prepare and distribute communications to increase awareness and participation.
  • Adhere to the policies, practices, and procedures of the Town of Riverview.
  • Understand and explain the policies, practices, and procedures of the Town of Riverview to the general public.
  • Always demonstrate and maintain a high standard of professional conduct.
  • Use problem solving skills but seek assistance when necessary.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Community Recreation Coordinator.
Part II - Job Requirements:
  • Familiarity with Town of Riverview policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Currently enrolled in either a part-time or full-time academic program.
  • Proven leadership through work experience, volunteer positions, membership in community organizations, etc.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office products, social media, and email in a corporate setting.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills; ability to effectively work with the public.
  • Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening.
  • Certification in Workplace CPR/ First Aid.
  • Familiarity with year-round outdoor recreation activities an asset.
Part III - Working Conditions:
  • Required to work regular evenings and weekends.
  • Required to work both indoors and outdoors and may be exposed to outdoor elements, extreme cold conditions, sun exposure, and adverse weather.
  • Position is considered student employment with a defined term.

This is a student position with a rate of pay of $17.30 for Six (6) hours per week.
