Schedule Description

DUTIES

Under the direction of the Manager, Academic Planning and Review in the Faculty of Science, the Student Experience Coordinator assists with increasing retention by enriching the student experience by supporting a variety of Science initiatives to promote student retention. Some examples of such initiatives that this role supports are; Cohorts, the student and mentorship program (STAMP), student visits to local schools through the “Let’s Talk Science” partnership, promoting participation in the Science Student Clubs and hosting student facing events. In addition, the Student Experience Coordinator manages and creates content for the Science Instagram account. This role works closely with faculty members, students, and colleagues within the Faculty of Science for the success of these initiatives.


MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in the creation and implementation of student retention activities.
  • Assist with the recruitment of admitted students to register for the cohorts.
  • Plan and execute activities of the cohorts. Develop and maintain forward-facing web and social media content for the cohort.
  • Design, deliver, and summarize experimental surveys for cohort program improvement.
  • Assist with STAMP (Student Mentorship Program). Encourage senior students to act as mentors to the first-year students as a part of the cohort and STAMP programs. Collect and analyze data from mentees and mentors to facilitate effective pairings. Oversee the cohort communications through Moodle.
  • Manage, create, and curate, the content for the Science Instagram account.
  • Develop and implement social media communication, promotion and messaging.
  • Promote the Science Student Clubs. Increase student participation and educate students on the support available from TRU and TRUSU.
  • Manage, and host Science student-oriented events. Coordinate the room bookings, event promotion and the registration.
  • Support of logistics and promotion of science research events, including helping to design a strong student engagement component.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

  • Four-year Undergraduate University degree


EXPERIENCE:

  • One-year related experience in each of:
    • Working directly with faculty and students to promote student engagement and retention, through cohorts and peer mentoring.
    • Planning, promoting and executing events, including helping to design a strong student engagement component.
    • Managing, creating and curating content for Instagram, preferably within a post secondary environment.


SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE OR ABILITIES RELATED TO THE JOB

  • Knowledge of cohorts and peer mentoring.
  • Creation and curating content for Instagram and other social media platforms.
  • Knowledge of Science cohorts, “STAMP”, “Let’s Talk Science and TRU Student Clubs.
  • Knowledge of Telemetry
  • Planning and hosting student focused events.
  • Ability to communicate effectively to a culturally diverse audience, both verbally and in writing, including strong interviewing, listening, and interpreting skills; ability to prepare and deliver oral presentations
  • Ability to use computer software and interfaces (i.e. Microsoft Office, student record systems, relational databases, scanners, social media)
  • Effective research, analytical, problem-solving, and planning skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines, maintaining accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to work well under pressure and to manage competing demands
  • Ability to apply knowledge of TRU policies and procedures to solve issues
  • Ability to deal courteously and tactfully with students, faculty and staff and the general public
  • Ability to travel, assisting faculty with Science-related student events
  • Valid Class 5 BC Drivers license with no restrictions that would prevent incumbent from required travel


WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Sitting at desk and computer for short periods of time
  • Standing for long periods of time at events, and general office conditions
  • Must be able to lift and move items weighing up to 10 kg
  • Travel Required
The salary for the above position is determined by the Collective Agreement with the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 4879, as it presently exists.

Pay Band

$27.90 - $31.00 ( CUPE Grade 06 (90% - 100%) )

Salary rate

Please Note: This position may be subject to a 90% salary for the first 560 hours of employment.
