Student Development Coordinator, Orientation & Transition (App. D/Temp.: May 2025 - October 2026)

Status: Appendix D/Temporary Assignment (May 2025 – October 2026)

Hours: Monday – Friday, 35 hours/week

Home Campus: Fennell (hybrid work arrangements available – minimum 3 days per week on-site)

Rate of Pay: Payband H (Start Rate: $36.29 per hour, plus 8% in lieu of vacation and benefits)

The Student Development Coordinator, Orientation & Transition will lead the development, coordination, promotion, and facilitation of Mohawk College’s student orientation, mentorship, and first-year experience programming designed to support students’ personal, academic, social, and developmental growth and success. This includes using current research and best practices in student affairs & development and universal design for learning to develop student learning outcomes and inform programmatic initiatives.

The incumbent will develop workshops and asynchronous material to facilitate training of students in designated leadership roles such as student mentors and MoCrew student staff, and, following training, will provide functional guidance and in-service training to the same as they fulfill their obligations as student leaders.

The role values teamwork, collaboration, commitment, and intentionality, and takes a student-centred approach, demonstrating strong intercultural competencies. What you’ll be doing:

Student Leadership
  1. Coordinate, implement, and assess Mohawk Student Leadership Development & Academy programming, delivered in-person, virtually, or a combination of formats.
  2. Design and facilitate workshops and training sessions through research and consultation with subject matter experts.
  3. Recruit facilitators from campus and community partners for workshops and training sessions.
  4. Promote student leadership programming to maximize participation and engagement.
  5. Conduct annual program assessments and provide recommendations for improvement.
  6. Participate in communities of practice, conduct research on student development theory, and stay current with best practices.
  7. Chair departmental meetings to inform curriculum and coordinate staff engagement.
  8. Respond to inquiries from students and staff via in-person, email, or phone.
  9. Assist with promoting awards and records related to student leadership and volunteerism.
Student Mentorship
  1. Assess student needs and design peer-to-peer engagement programs supporting development.
  2. Develop content for programs supporting first-year students and upper-year mentors, in partnership with subject matter experts.
  3. Coordinate engagement initiatives for mentees and develop session content.
  4. Recruit and train upper-year mentors, and support their development and engagement.
  5. Track engagement and provide assessments for program evaluation and compensation.
First Year Experience (FYE) & Orientation Activities
  1. Lead coordination of orientation activities each term, collaborating with partners to ensure meaningful experiences.
  2. Develop and implement FYE strategies and programs, including orientation and re-orientation courses.
  3. Contribute to program assessment strategies for student experience enhancement.
Administrative & Team Support
  1. Support the delivery of departmental programs and services across campuses.
  2. Represent Student Life at committees and events, fostering positive relationships and engagement.
  3. Provide guidance to student staff and volunteers.
  4. Maintain knowledge of college services, important dates, and processes.
  5. Coordinate with Marketing to maintain program webpages and content.
  6. Manage social media content and engagement.
  7. Respect confidentiality and respond appropriately to students in distress.
  8. Support departmental administrative tasks, including budget monitoring and record-keeping.

Other duties as assigned.

What you’ll bring to the role:

  • Minimum 3-year diploma/degree or equivalent in Education, Humanities, Social Sciences, Leadership, or Human Services.
  • At least 3 years of experience in an educational or similar environment.
  • Experience in student development, education, volunteer management, or event planning is an asset.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Facilitation experience in virtual and in-person settings preferred.
  • Ability to work independently, solve problems, and manage multiple priorities.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Experience with virtual tools such as Canva, Zoom, MS Teams, and social media platforms.
  • Commitment to human rights, equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility.
  • Effective communication skills with diverse populations.
