Job summary

Michael Garron Hospital seeks a Student Clinical Extern in Respiratory Therapy to assist in patient care under supervision. The position entails supporting respiratory therapy functions, participating in shadow shifts with Registered Respiratory Therapists, and fulfilling a commitment of at least 1 shift every 3 weeks to ensure practical experience and learning.

Qualifications

  • BLS Certificate must be current.

Position Overview

The Respiratory Therapy Extern works in collaboration with and under the direct and/or indirect supervision of an appointed regulated healthcare professional and the mentorship of a Clinical Extern Coordinator to provide quality and safe patient care. The Respiratory Therapy Extern assists respiratory therapy technicians by helping manage and restock emergency equipment and refill oxygen tanks. Shadow shifts are also available for any extern who would like to have the opportunity to shadow a RegisteredRespiratory Therapist (RRT) across multiple hospital departments based on interest. As a Respiratory therapy student extern, you are required to work a minimum of 1 shift per 3-week period, and can work up to a maximum of 75 hours bi-weekly.

Education

  • Must be currently enrolled in either second or third year of an accredited Respiratory Therapy program
  • Must hold a current BLS Certificate

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and other relevant legislation
  • Knowledge of the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System
  • Knowledge of Emergency Codes
  • Ability to work in a job that requires lifting, considerable walking, and standing, bending, pushing and pulling of equipment
  • Demonstrated knowledge of infection control practices
  • Demonstrated ability to foster caring and trusting relationships with patients and families in an effort to support patient focused care
  • Demonstrates a positive attitude and the willingness to work effectively in a team
  • Demonstrated commitment to on-going learning and professional development
  • Ability to maintain a consistent level of productivity and efficiency
  • Ability to ask questions and seek out assistance when unsure of how to proceed with a task that is unfamiliar
  • Ability to perform responsibilities in a courteous manner
  • Compliance with confidentiality requirements under the MGH Privacy Policy
  • Effective organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
  • Patient service-oriented, with the ability to effectively work in a diverse and inclusive environment
  • Good work and attendance record is required.
