Reporting to the Coordinator of Literacy and Educational Technology, the P-5 Student-Centered Literacy Coach is a regional position. Coaching support will focus on intentional and student-centered planning, instruction, and assessment in literacy. The coach will be responsible for working regionally with administrators and supporting teachers within a coaching framework in implementing best practices in literacy. The coach will model effective strategies for instruction, assessment, and inclusive practices to support learners. The coach will work with teachers in co-planning, co-teaching, and post-lesson reflection, including the discussion and analysis of student work, tracking literacy achievement, and establishing student-centered goals. The coach, as part of a team, will track, assess, and evaluate the effectiveness of the student-centered coaching strategy.

In addition to coaching, the position will provide ELS (Early Literacy Support) intervention support in the early elementary classrooms using a co-teaching model, and when necessary, during small group intervention outside of the classroom.

In addition to providing support at the school level, coaches will also collaborate with other coaches and provide leadership related to DEECD/Regional literacy priorities.

Training/Qualifications/Experience:

  • Valid Nova Scotia Teaching License, required;
  • Training as a mentor/coach;
  • Graduate Studies or Masters Degree in curriculum and instruction and/or literacy instruction preferred;
  • Previous experience or equivalent experience in mentoring/coaching teachers at the regional level, preferred;
  • Previous experience or equivalent experience in literacy intervention, preferred;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with regional and DEECD literacy and elementary education initiatives;
  • Successful experience teaching literacy at the elementary level; including the integration of technology;
  • Demonstrated understanding of outcomes-based education and literacy curriculum;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of high leverage teaching methodologies such as incorporating small group instruction;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in Tier One practices and balanced assessment;
  • Training and/or experience in peer coaching, co-teaching, and facilitating professional development;
  • Experience and/or training in gathering, analyzing, and using assessment data to inform instruction;
  • Commitment to continuous professional development;
  • Excellent team building and interpersonal skills;
  • Well-developed decision-making and creative problem-solving abilities;
  • Ability to collect, enter, analyze, and interpret data to improve student learning and achievement;
  • Demonstrated commitment to respect for diversity, inclusion, culturally responsive pedagogy, and social justice.

Open Vacancy Round Hiring

  • The Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education will conduct teacher interviews commencing on July 4 for the Open Vacancy hiring round.
