Job summary

University Health Network (UHN) is seeking a motivated student to support a pilot randomized controlled trial for chronic low back pain at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute – University Centre. Under supervision, contribute to diagnostic validation and Phase II trial activities, gaining hands-on clinical research experience.

The role offers in-person work 2–3 days per week from Sept 14, 2026 to Feb 28, 2027, with responsibilities in data processing, recruitment, scheduling, and regulatory

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled at University of Toronto - St. George Campus or Toronto Metropolitan University.
  • Applicants from medicine/health sciences or related disciplines are encouraged to apply.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work with a team and independently, in-person 2–3 days/week.

Responsibilities

  • Assist retrospective database analysis with de-identified records.
  • Apply literature-based diagnostic criteria for nociplastic pain.
  • Collect, enter, clean, and organize data.
  • Support recruitment and study activities.
  • Schedule and track study visits and sessions.
  • Monitor attendance and follow-up.
  • Administer questionnaires and outcome measures.
  • Distribute ActiGraph devices and organize data.
  • Maintain study materials with de-identification.
  • Assist with QA and regulatory documentation.
  • Attend weekly research team meetings.

Position Summary
The Rehabilitation Pain Service at Toronto Rehabilitation Institute – University Centre is seeking a motivated student to support apilot randomized controlled trial for individuals with chronic low back pain.

Under the supervision ofDr.Andrea Furlan and the study team, the student will contribute to both Phase I (diagnostic validation work) and Phase II (pilot randomized controlled trial).The student will gain hands‑on exposure to clinical researchmethodology, chronic pain rehabilitation, functional assessment procedures, wearable activity monitoring, and interdisciplinary pain management within an academic healthcare environment. To support clinical learning and practical experience, the student will also participatein select clinical and assessment‑related activities under supervision.

This is a temporary part-time position from September 14, 2026 - February 28, 2027. The successful candidate will be expected to work approximately 2-3 days per week and be available to work in person at Toronto Rehabilitation Institute - University Centre.

Duties

  • Assist with retrospective database analysis using de-identified clinical records
  • Apply literature-based diagnostic criteria for nociplastic pain under supervision
  • Collecting, entering, cleaning and organizing data (Data processing)
  • Assist with participant recruitment and study activities
  • Support scheduling and tracking of study visits and intervention sessions
  • Monitor participant attendance and follow-up completion
  • Support administration of study questionnaires and functional outcome measures
  • Assist with ActiGraph wearable fitness tracker distribution, tracking, and data organization
  • Support transcription organization and de-identification procedures for study materials
  • Assist with quality assurance and regulatory documentation activities
  • Attend weekly research team meetings
    Qualifications
    • Currently enrolled at University of Toronto - St. George Campus or Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) in downtown Toronto.
    • Applicants from programs related to medicine, health sciences, healthcare, or other health-related disciplines, in addition to students from professional health programs (occupational therapy, nursing, pharmacy, etc.)are encouraged to apply.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail.
    • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills.
    • Ability to work with a team and independently.
    • Highly motivated to work in healthcare.
    • Proficiency with MS Office software (including, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is required.
    • Experience working with REDCap is considered an asset.
    • Previous experience with clinical trials, randomized controlled trials, clinical research, or working with research participants is considered an asset.
    • Ability and willingness to work in person at Toronto Rehabilitation Institute -University Centre 2-3 days per week is required.
    • Availability to work approximately 10-15 hours per week during the contract period is required.
