Job summary

University Health Network is seeking a Kinesiologist to join the Rehabilitation Pain service within the Comprehensive Interprofessional Pain Program. You will assess and treat musculoskeletal disorders and chronic pain as part of a multidisciplinary team at Toronto Rehab – University Centre.

You will collaborate with physicians, nurses, therapists and researchers, delivering patient‑centred care, education and program evaluation while advancing quality improvements and research initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology and 5+ years of experience.
  • Current CKO registration in good standing.
  • CPR (HeartSaver Plus) on employment.
  • Experience with chronic pain and complex disability is an asset.
  • Experience coordinating with an interdisciplinary health care team across multiple sites.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Mentoring staff and learners; strong problem solving.
  • Interest in patient education materials and CBT-like strategies.
  • Openness to mindfulness/relaxation approaches.
  • Experience with chronic pain an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Perform patient assessments evaluating function.
  • Deliver coordinated patient-centred care with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Review and triage patient referrals.
  • Participate in goal setting with patients and provide education.
  • Maintain relationships with stakeholders to improve service delivery.
  • Facilitate referrals to community resources and document plans.

  • Support patient safety and follow hospital policies.
  • Collaborate on research activities within the program.

Position Summary

The Rehabilitation Pain service, is part of the Comprehensive Interprofessional Pain Program at UHN and is a clinical interdisciplinary program that investigates, assesses, and treats chronic pain and musculoskeletal disorders. Collaboration within the clinical and research interdisciplinary team, which includes physicians, kinesiologists, nurses, biomedical engineers, and scientists, is a key component of this role.

The kinesiologist will be an integral member of the clinical teamwho provides comprehensive assessment, consultation, care and patient education to individuals with musculoskeletal disorders and chronic pain.

Duties

  • Performing patient assessments that evaluate function;
  • Developing and delivering coordinated patient-centred care through collaboration with the interdisciplinary team;
  • Reviewing and triaging patient referrals;
  • Participating in goal setting with patients; providing patient education as needed;
  • Maintaining relationships with various stakeholders and influencing positive improvement in service delivery, patient outcomes and population health;
  • Facilitating referrals to appropriate community resources as needed; communicating effectively with patients and internal/external care providers, including completing reports and documenting patient assessments and care plans;
  • Measuring the impact of patient-care programs and educational programs;
  • Participating in professional and hospital initiatives related to quality improvement and research;
  • Mentoring learners and other staff; covering for colleagues;
  • Demonstrating an understanding of, complying with, and committing to patient safety responsibilities; and following hospital plans, policies and procedures in order to ensure a safe environment for patients.
  • The kinesiologist will also support and collaborate on research activities within the program. The kinesiologist will perform cross-functional responsibilities and other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s University degree in Kinesiology with minimum 5 years’ experience
  • Current registration and member in good standing with the College of Kinesiologists of Ontario (CKO)
  • Membership with Professional Association (e.g. Ontario Kinesiology Association) preferred
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (C Level) Heart Saver Plus Canada (on employment)
  • Experience in managing patients with complex disability (e.g.,chronic pain) with overlapping mental health issues is an asset
  • Experience coordinating with an interdisciplinary health care team in a multi-site academic health care setting is an asset
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated conflict resolution and creative problem-solving skills
  • Interest in producing written patient educational materials is an asset
  • Openness to integrating cognitive-behavioural-therapy-like strategies, mindfulness, and/or relaxation techniques into the therapeutic approach an asset
  • Experience with chronic pain an asset
