Full-time role
JD / Day to Day
Our client is hiring a Structural Engineer to join their growing engineering team in Ottawa. The firm prioritizes safety and quality in every project, fostering partnerships built on trust, transparency, and collaboration for mutual success. Joining this team means stepping into a fast-paced, highly dynamic environment where innovation, technical precision, and practical buildability come first.
Unlike traditional large firms where engineers are often restricted to narrow, repetitive tasks, this firm specializes in a diverse range of niche and complex engineering challenges. On a day-to-day basis, you will work closely with leadership on structural design, connection engineering, and site inspections. You will spend your days balancing computer-aided drafting and structural modeling with hands‑on site visits, client collaboration, and direct project execution. A comprehensive 3-to-6-month mentorship and onboarding program is provided to train you on specialized design methods, enabling you to rapidly expand your structural engineering skill set and take real ownership of projects.
Responsibilities
- Design & Modeling: Develop detailed structural designs and technical drawings using AutoCAD, Revit, Civil 3D, MicroStation, and Bluebeam. Create accurate drafting and modeling across commercial, residential, and specialized structural projects (e.g., bridges, buildings, steel, timber, and infrastructure).
- Structural Analysis: Perform comprehensive structural frame and connection analyses using S-FRAME, Mathcad, STAAD, ETABS, and other engineering calculation tools to ensure full compliance with safety standards and building codes.
- Niche Structural & Connection Design: Assist in specialized engineering areas including welding design, steel connection design, seismic restraints/anchorage (MEP), and interior fit-ups.
- Site Visits & Inspections: Conduct regular site visits to inspect ongoing construction, assess existing structural conditions, verify load anchorage/pull testing, and ensure site compliance with design specifications.
- Project Management & Workflow: Manage assigned project deliverables from concept to completion, meeting tight deadlines while balancing resource allocation and budget constraints.
- Collaboration & Communication: Coordinate closely with multidisciplinary teams, including architects, contractors, steel fabricators, and project managers, to resolve technical issues and keep projects moving forward.
- Documentation: Prepare thorough calculation packages, technical reports, structural reviews, and documentation required for regulatory body approvals and client submissions.
Required Skills
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
- Minimum 3–5 years of overall engineering experience.
- At least 2 years of dedicated Civil/Structural Engineering experience.

- Specialized Connection & Timber Software:
- Experience with IDEA Statica (niche connection design).
- Experience with Woodworks (Canadian wood/timber element and connection design software).
- Industry Background: Experience working directly with steel fabricators, truss manufacturers, or deck manufacturers (e.g., Canam).
