Job summary

Stantec Consulting International Ltd. in Edmonton, AB is seeking a junior Structural EIT or Jr. P.Eng to join our Edmonton structural team. You will work on a range of industrial and general structural projects under supervision of senior engineers.

Responsibilities include modeling, design, cross-disciplinary coordination, field work, shop drawing review, and support for specifications and proposals. Travel and PE license pursuit are encouraged.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering with a Structural focus.
• Registered as engineer-in-training or Professional Engineer with APEGA.
• Prior co-op/internship or up to 5 years of engineering experience.

Responsibilities

• Interpret drawings, codes and standards for projects.
• Perform structural modeling and design using standard software and hand calculations.
• Coordinate with architectural, mechanical, piping, electrical and civil disciplines.
• Assist in field work and shop drawing review, RFIs, site observation reports.
• Contribute to technical specifications and project proposals.
• Attend project coordination meetings and work within a multi-discipline team.
• Adhere to Stantec’s quality control and EH&S guidelines.
• Travel as needed and support license-licensing goals.

At Stantec our offices offer a vibrant and dynamic environment with excellent opportunities for professional growth. As a junior member of the Edmonton, AB structural team, the ideal candidate will work in the Edmonton, AB office.

The role of a Structural EIT or Jr. P.Eng is to work as a team member on small and large projects under the guidance and close supervision of an Intermediate or Senior Engineer. The Structural EIT or Jr. P.Eng will assist with the development of analyses, component designs, report writing, coordination with other disciplines, and other tasks and designs for industrial and general structural engineering projects in areas such as oil and gas, pulp and paper, power generation and transmission, mining, and material handling.

Your Responsibilities

• Conduct basic interpretations of drawings, design codes and standards, and other similar documents.
• Perform structural modeling and design of structural components using relevant company standard software, hand calculations, and proprietary manufacturer software.
• Coordinate with other disciplines (architectural, mechanical, piping, electrical, civil, etc.) to ensure compatibility with the design intent.
• Perform field work as directed by a senior engineer/designer.
• Assist in the review of shop drawings and submittals, respond to requests for information, prepare site observation reports, and perform other contract administration tasks.
• Assist with the development of technical specifications and proposals.
• Attend project coordination meetings with internal team members and/or clients.
• Work as a contributing team member within a multi-discipline team.
• Understand and work within Stantec's quality control guidelines.
• Comply with Stantec's EH&S program, with a focus on safety in the field.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the senior engineering staff.

Capabilities and Credentials

• Knowledge and application of structural design codes (NBCC, CSA, AISC, ACI).
• Knowledge of and ability to use industry standard structural analysis software suites (STAAD.Pro, SAP 2000, etc.), Microsoft Office Suite and AutoCAD.
• Understanding of structural engineering concepts and ability to effectively communicate ideas to others.
• Strong in fundamentals and first principles, sound technical skills, with focus on accurate design calculations and analysis.
• Knowledge of structural systems means and methods, materials, and industry standards.
• Recognizes when problems are developing and initiates appropriate corrective actions in a timely manner.
• Ability to check own work for accuracy and completeness and manage time to meet project budget and schedule.
• Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thinking.
• Skilled at conducting preliminary research.
• Field experience is an asset.
• Enthusiastic to expand structural engineering knowledge and keen to work in a team environment with strong interpersonal skills.
• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
• Willingness to work on multiple jobs/projects at a time.
• Good presentation, written and verbal communication skills.
• Willingness to travel and a valid driver’s license.
• Willingness to consider gaining PE license in the United States of America.

Education and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering with a Structural course focus. A Master’s degree is considered an asset.
• Registered as engineer-in-training or Professional Engineer with APEGA.
• Previous co-op/internship of related work experience, or up to 5 years of engineering experience.

In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
