As a Structural Engineer in the Bridges and Geotechnics Division, you will perform project management and represent the City as a technical expert on capital projects and maintenance of bridges and other transportation structures. Primary duties include:
- Manage projects throughout all stages to ensure the procurement, design, construction, and close-out phases are delivered on schedule, on budget, and to a high-quality standard in alignment with the project's business case and charter.
- Develop and sustain strategic and working relationships with internal and external customers, community and business organizations, and partners to facilitate excellence in service delivery.
- Provide technical expertise and quality assurance decisions for City projects including bridges, bridge-sized culverts, tunnels, interchanges, Light Rail Transit (LRT) extensions, retaining walls, noise walls, sign structures, and other transportation structures.
- Complete select structural engineering designs, load ratings, inspections, and evaluations internally.
- Develop and help to maintain Design Guidelines, construction specifications, and standard details.
- Research new bridge engineering materials, products, and processes for acceptance / prequalification.
- Be on The City's bridge emergency response callout list rotationally but regularly, including after-hours (an additional stipend is provided to employees for this work).
Qualifications
- A degree in Civil Engineering or a related Engineering field and at least 4 years of relevant professional engineering experience obtained after receiving your P. Eng. designation and a current licensure as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) complete with practicing status OR licensure and practicing status by the first day of work. - Experience in the design and construction administration / resident engineering of bridges and other transportation structures is required.
- Applied knowledge of project management in either a government or consulting environment will be considered an asset.
- Experience in bridge and transportation structure inspections and/or asset management will be considered an asset.
- Experience working and negotiating with developers and interest groups and presenting to legislative and political bodies is considered an asset.
- Success in this position requires sensitivity to corporate and business unit goals and priorities, along with the ability to provide technical and professional advice to both internal and external contacts, using professional judgement and practical expertise.
- The successful candidate will possess well-developed communication skills, the ability to work both independently and in a team environment, and a high standard of thoroughness, accuracy, and attention to detail.
