Job summary

STRIVE Recruitment is seeking a Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Coordinator for a permanent role in Pickering, Ontario. The position blends field safety on construction sites with project planning, training, auditing, reporting, and continuous improvement across multiple projects.

The ideal candidate will promote a proactive safety culture, ensure regulatory compliance, and support risk management with project teams, clients, and subcontractors.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health, Engineering, Construction Management, or related discipline.
  • Strong knowledge of Ontario health and safety legislation, construction safety practices.
  • Experience conducting site inspections, audits, incident investigations, and hazard assessments.

Responsibilities

  • Visit active construction sites to observe practices and promote safety culture.
  • Participate in JHAs, risk assessments, site inspections, audits, and safety tours.
  • Verify safety controls are implemented and functioning correctly.
  • Assist with incident investigations and root cause analysis.
  • Support project-specific safety planning and hazard assessments with teams.
  • Communicate with clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies as required.
  • Track incidents, corrective actions, inspections, and safety improvements.
  • Prepare monthly safety reports, metrics, and trend analyses.
  • Maintain health, safety, and environmental programs and documentation.
  • Deliver toolbox talks, safety presentations, and training materials.
  • Travel regularly to project sites throughout Ontario.

Our client is a leading global specialty geotechnical contractor that delivers innovative foundation and ground engineering solutions for complex infrastructure, commercial, industrial, and civil construction projects. With a strong reputation for technical expertise, safety, and project execution, they are seeking a Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Coordinator to join their growing team in Pickering, Ontario.

THE ROLE

Reporting to the Health, Safety & Environmental team, the HSE Coordinator will play a key role in promoting and maintaining a proactive safety culture across multiple construction projects. This position combines field-based safety support with project planning, training, auditing, reporting, and continuous improvement initiatives. The successful candidate will work closely with project teams, supervisors, clients, and subcontractors to ensure safe work practices, regulatory compliance, and effective risk management.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conduct regular visits to active construction sites to observe work practices, engage with crews, and promote a positive safety culture.
  • Participate in job hazard assessments (JHAs), energy-based risk assessments, site inspections, audits, and safety tours.
  • Verify critical safety controls are implemented and functioning effectively.
  • Assist with incident investigations by gathering accurate information and supporting root cause analysis.
  • Work closely with supervisors and project teams to support project-specific safety planning and hazard assessments.
  • Communicate with clients, contractors, and regulatory agencies as required.
  • Track incidents, corrective actions, inspections, and safety improvements using safety management systems.
  • Monitor corrective actions from incidents, audits, and inspections to ensure timely completion.
  • Prepare monthly safety reports, metrics, and trend analyses.
  • Assist in maintaining and updating health, safety, and environmental programs and documentation.
  • Develop and deliver toolbox talks, safety presentations, and training materials.
  • Create engaging safety communications that reinforce key safety initiatives and lessons learned.
  • Support pre-job planning, tender reviews, contract safety requirements, and emergency response planning.
  • Promote continuous improvement while fostering an environment where employees feel comfortable raising safety concerns.
  • Travel regularly to project sites throughout Ontario to support project teams.
REQUIREMENTS
  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health, Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
  • Previous experience in a Health & Safety Coordinator or HSE role within construction, heavy civil, infrastructure, industrial, or manufacturing environments.
  • Strong knowledge of Ontario health and safety legislation, construction safety practices, and risk assessment methodologies.
  • Experience conducting site inspections, audits, incident investigations, and hazard assessments.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust with field personnel and project teams.
  • Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Experience using safety management software is considered an asset.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel and Word.
  • Self-motivated with excellent problem-solving and time management skills.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel regularly to project sites.
  • Passion for creating safe workplaces and driving continuous improvement in health, safety, and environmental performance.
