VCH’s Indigenous Health team collaborates with staff, physicians, and community partners to provide strategic leadership, foster collaboration, and engage communities to make VCH a more culturally competent and safe organization.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the development of a Vancouver Coastal Health-wide education plan and facilitate cultural safety training aligned with the organization’s values and strategic goals, enhancing capacity to deliver culturally safe health services.
  • Provide consultation on cultural safety issues and contribute to developing guidelines, systems, and tools to support cultural safety across all health services.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary colleagues to ensure staff development and participation in cultural safety initiatives, including curriculum development for training programs.
  • Support the integration of Indigenous cultural safety principles into all training and organizational initiatives.
  • Work with Indigenous Health Program, community partners, and stakeholders to improve Indigenous access to VCH services, prioritizing patient and staff safety and continuous quality improvement.
Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Master’s Degree in Adult Learning or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of recent experience in coaching, mentoring, training, conflict resolution, and facilitating Indigenous cultural competency curricula.
  • Minimum of 5 years working with Indigenous organizations or communities, with extensive knowledge of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit cultures, especially within the Vancouver Coastal Health region.
  • Valid BC driver’s license for local travel.

Preference will be given to individuals of Indigenous identity, in accordance with Section 41 of the BC Human Rights Code.

Knowledge & Abilities
  • Deep understanding of Indigenous cultures and history in BC and Canada.
  • Ability to create culturally safe environments and demonstrate cultural safety training expertise.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, and reports such as the "In Plain Sight" report and calls to action to eliminate Indigenous-specific racism in healthcare.
  • Ability to identify system gaps and barriers affecting Indigenous peoples' access to healthcare.
  • Strong leadership, communication, relationship-building, and conflict management skills, especially in cross-cultural settings.
  • Experience in curriculum design, teaching, coaching, and mentoring healthcare providers.
  • Self-directed, collaborative, and able to work under pressure.
Additional Information

All health care workers in publicly-funded facilities must report vaccination and infection history as per Ministry of Health policy. New hires will be required to provide this information during onboarding.
