STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS ADVISOR

CONTRIBUTING TO THE CMPA

The Communication and Marketing department provides strategic advice, guides overall messaging and positioning, and provides marketing, creative writing, editing, translation and graphic design services. The department also monitors changes in the physician and healthcare environments, proactively identifies risks and emerging issues, and works to ensure that CMPA messages resonate with our members. In addition, the Communication and Marketing department is integral in driving and supporting change within the Association.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Manager, Strategic Communications, the Strategic Communications Advisor role provides advanced writing and editing skills in support of a broad range of internal and external communication initiatives – including the development of medico-legal advice and risk management articles on the CMPA website, CEO messages, speeches, video scripts, etc. The Strategic Communications Advisor also provides strategic and proactive communications advice, guidance, and coaching to internal client departments and senior leaders (e.g. CEO and President) to support the organization’s business objectives. The Advisor brings a strategic mindset and critical thinking skills needed to support the development and execution of internal and external communication strategies. The Advisor proactively seeks opportunities to enhance CMPA’s communication activities and strives to build relationships across the organization, and with external stakeholders when needed, collaborating across departments to ensure consistency of internal and external branding and messaging.

POSITION ACTIVITIES

Strategic Communications Guidance & Support (60-70%)

  1. Supports the communications needs of the CEO, the President, and other senior leaders, such as drafting messages from the CEO and the President, for Council, stakeholders, staff, and members in various formats.
  2. Develops and delivers external and internal communication strategies, plans, and products to support client groups or specific initiatives as needed.
  3. Promotes continuous improvement of communications initiatives by collecting appropriate data, analyzing and measuring effectiveness, and refining strategies as required.
  4. Reinforces the CMPA brand, corporate mission, vision, values, and initiatives both externally and internally through written and visual storytelling.

Writing & Editing Support (30-40%)

  1. Provides editorial support, as needed, including editing (line editing, copy editing, proofreading), to produce clear, impactful content.
  2. Working with Communication colleagues, supports content management of CMPA’s online material – ensuring material is regularly reviewed and updated.
  3. Writes clear and captivating content for internal and external stakeholder audiences – including articles on the CMPA website, eNewsletter content, speeches, video scripts, social media posts, etc.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  1. Minimum 4 year Bachelor’s degree in a specialized field (e.g. Marketing, Public Relations, Journalism), or an equivalent field of study.
  2. Minimum of 5 years of experience in progressive communications roles.
  3. Demonstrated experience producing high-quality copy and content for a variety of channels.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with staff and leaders at all levels, work in a team environment, share ideas and learn from others.
  5. Experience with style guides, such as the Chicago Manual of Style and National Library of Medicine citations, and ability to apply the CMPA Corporate Style Guide.
  6. Experience executing measurable, multi-channel communication strategies and plans.
  7. Experience working in an association with a national focus and an active membership is a strong asset.
  8. Knowledge of and/or experience working within the Canadian healthcare system is an asset.

  1. Excellent editorial and writing skills with the ability to clearly articulate messages to a variety of audiences across a wide range of media.
  2. Demonstrates high aptitude for adaptability and flexibility.
  3. Excellent active listening skills.
  4. Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and meet tight deadlines.
  5. Excellent organizational and consulting skills with a high attention to quality, detail, and accuracy.
  6. Able to solve problems independently and in groups.
  7. Strong consultation and facilitative abilities, including an ability to communicate with a range of individuals on complex matters and to bring conflicting points of view to consensus.
  8. Bilingualism (including ability to write and edit in French) is a strong asset.

POSTING DETAILS

  1. Job type: This is a regular full-time opportunity.
  2. Salary range: $83,700 to $111,900 – this role is classified as a level 8.
  3. Location: Hybrid - Primary Remote Job. You can work from a home-based office the majority of the time within the provinces of Ontario and Québec, with regular on-site presence at the CMPA office (1-2 days per week). If you prefer, you can choose to work out of the CMPA office in Ottawa, Ontario near the beautiful Dow’s Lake.
  4. Skill assessment: selected candidates may be required to complete a skill assessment.
