JOB SUMMARY

The Stormwater Management & Environmental Monitoring unit is responsible for environmental monitoring and assessment programs that are integral to watershed planning, and the evaluation of the city’s surface water management infrastructure, policies and practices; investigation of water environment impacts; and ongoing review and update of standards for environmental monitoring and assessment and surface water management.

You are responsible for undertaking field investigations/studies, analysis and reporting, as required, to monitor and assess the surface, ground water, sewer and aquatic biology characteristics within the city.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of 2 year community college diploma as an Environmental Technician, Civil Engineering Technician or other related field.

Minimum of 2 years of experience is required in surface water sampling and monitoring, biological sampling and monitoring or equivalent in wastewater sampling and monitoring

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

Confined space entry training or completion of this training within the timeframe defined by the employer

KNOWLEDGE
  • Hydrometric (flow monitoring) equipment and procedures
  • Fisheries and Benthic invertebrate sampling and identification
  • Surface water sampling, preservation and storing techniques
  • Nautical safety regulations
  • Confined space entry procedures
  • Flow runoff and rainfall relationships
  • Traffic control procedures
  • City of Ottawa policies and procedures related to health and safety
  • Must possess the training, experience and knowledge to organize the work and its performance
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Language Requirement:English oral, reading, writing
  • Driver’s License Requirement: A valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated
  • You may initially be paid 95% of your starting rate of pay, in accordance with the collective agreement.
  • Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
