Job Description

Position Purpose Summary:
This role provides service to customers, sorts incoming products, and assists in the ongoing retail operations of The Salvation Army Thrift Store.

Accountabilities

The incumbent may perform all, some, or similar range of duties:

  • Operations
  • Greet and interact with customers/donors in a positive, friendly, and courteous manner.
  • Contribute to meeting store sales targets; provide efficient courteous customer service; use tact when dealing with difficult customers.
  • Be knowledgeable regarding product pricing and featured sale products; protect the integrity of all donated items.
  • Maintain store opening and closing procedures as required.
  • Responsible for accurate completion of all customer transactions including cash and debit sales with minimal voids, overages, or shortages.
  • Adhere to store policy regarding cheques, credit cards, refunds, voids, and holds.
  • Process raw materials by loading/unloading, sorting, packing, hanging, pricing, and storing donations.
  • Respond to customer inquiries by phone/in person with knowledge of stock.
  • Monitor store activity to ensure security.
  • Assist with store layout plans, window displays, and merchandise displays to attract customers; ensure store attractiveness through tidy maintenance.
  • Contribute to inventory control by retrieving, sorting, hanging, and pricing as directed.
  • Assist with donation turnover, replenish inventory, and remove inventory from the sales floor as directed.
  • Handle merchandise safely and organize it properly; assist in stock rotation; recycle textiles and metal as appropriate.
  • Assist donors with contributions, unload donations, and place stock appropriately.
  • Ensure proper sorting, processing, and pricing of goods per store policy; maintain quality standards.
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Health and Safety
  • Contribute to the safety of staff and customers (e.g., snow removal, clear fire exits, clean spills, remove obstacles).
  • Maintain an attractive, organized, and safe store environment; tidy shelves, clean, sweep, dust, and mop as necessary; rotate cleaning of common areas.
  • Comply with OH&S Act and Regulations and The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.

Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

Critical Relationship Management

Routine interactions with internal staff (Store Manager, Corps Officer(s), volunteers, staff) and external guests and vendors.

Managerial/Technical Responsibilities

Reports directly to the Store Manager. No direct reports.

Financial and Material Management

Moderate material responsibilities; use and maintain organization assets; no financial transaction processing or budget responsibilities.

All responsibilities must align with The Salvation Army’s Mission Statement and uphold our code of conduct professionally.

Working Conditions

This is a permanent part-time position with varying weekly schedules, including weekdays and Saturdays. Must be able to stand for long periods, lift/move up to 30 pounds, and take necessary health and safety precautions.

Education, Experience, and Qualifications

Willingness to support The Salvation Army’s mission; compliance with health and safety policies; alternative education and experience considered. Completion of some high school coursework preferred. Experience in processing, distribution, customer service, cash handling, and working in computerized environments is required. Knowledge of lifting guidelines and product branding is a plus.

Skills and Capabilities

Attention to detail, self-motivation, ability to work independently and in a team, good interpersonal and communication skills, physical capability to lift/carry up to 29 lbs, and ability to pass screening and background checks.

Compensation

Target range: $16.50 to $20.62, up to $24.74, based on experience and qualifications. Reasonable accommodations available upon request via Recruitment.Accommodations@salvationarmy.ca.
