Job Description
Position purpose The role provides service to customers, sorts incoming product and assists in the ongoing retail operations of The Salvation Army Thrift Store.
Accountabilities
- Operations: Greet and interact with customers/donors in a positive, friendly and courteous manner; contribute to meeting store sales targets; provide efficient courteous customer service; use tact when dealing with difficult customers; be knowledgeable regarding product pricing and featured sale products; protect the integrity of all donated items; maintain store opening and closing procedures; responsible for accurate completion of all customer transactions including cash and debit sales with minimal voids, overages or shortages; adhere to store policy regarding cheques, credit cards, refunds, voids and holds; process raw materials by loading/unloading, sorting, packing, hanging, pricing and storing donations; respond to customer enquiries about stock; monitor store security; assist with store layout plans, window displays and merchandise displays to attract customers; contribute to inventory control by retrieving, sorting, hanging and pricing as directed; assist with donation turnover and inventory replenishment; handle merchandise safely and in an organized manner; assist donors with contributions and placement of stock; maintain proper sorting and processing of goods and pricing per store policy; perform other duties as required.
- Health and Safety: Contribute to safety of staff and customers (e.g., snow removal, clear fire exits, clean spills); maintain an attractive, organized and safe store appearance; tidy, restock shelves, clean as necessary; on a rotational basis clean the lunchroom, washroom and other common areas; work in compliance with OH&S Act and Salvation Army health and safety policies and procedures; perform other work-related duties as assigned.
- Critical relationship management: Clarification of information and routine interactions; internal: Store Manager, Corps Officers, volunteers and staff; external: guests and vendors.
- Managerial/Technical responsibilities: Reports to the Store Associate; direct reports: none.
- Financial and material management: Moderate material responsibilities; maintains organization assets per guidelines; does not process financial transactions or have budget responsibilities; all duties performed in accordance with the Mission Statement and code of conduct.
- Working conditions: Permanent full-time position; schedule may vary including weekdays and Saturdays; ability to stand for long periods and lift/move up to 30 pounds; may require wearing gloves and following precautionary health and safety measures.
- Education, experience and qualifications: Willingness to support the Salvation Army mission in Canada; comply with OH&S Act and health and safety policies; alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- Education, qualifications and certifications: Completion of some high school; alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- Experience and knowledge: Months of experience in processing or distribution of goods or customer service; knowledge of lifting guidelines; cash handling experience and familiarity with cash registers, deposits and reports; product brand awareness is an asset; experience in a computerized environment.
- Skills and capabilities: Attention to detail; self-motivated and disciplined; able to work independently and as part of a team; strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills; physically capable of lifting up to 29 lbs frequently without assistance, including bending, twisting, pushing and pulling of products.
- Screening: Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks satisfactory to The Salvation Army.

Compensation
The target hiring range for this position is $17.85 to $19.69 with a maximum of $23.63. Placement in the salary range will be based on market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills and qualifications relevant to the role.
