Overview

At Houston Methodist, the Sterile Processing Coordinator oversees and coordinates activities within the Sterile Processing department, including staff training, workflow monitoring, supply management, scheduling, staff evaluation, and assisting in departmental budgeting. The role involves managing decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, reprocessing, sterilization of instrumentation, and case cart assembly, ensuring seamless workflow between the Operating Room (OR) and Sterile Processing. The Coordinator also supports compliance with regulatory standards.

Responsibilities
PEOPLE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Coordinate and assign processing services based on technician acuity, ensuring timely decontamination and reprocessing. Serve as a primary resource for staff.
  • Model and mentor staff, facilitate teamwork with OR staff, and maintain workflow continuity.
  • Communicate effectively with team members, coach staff in communication skills, and collaborate on employee engagement initiatives.
SERVICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Coordinate daily interface between sterile processing, surgery, and materials management to ensure availability of supplies and instruments.
  • Anticipate needs by preparing supplies and instruments for upcoming surgeries.
  • Plan and monitor staffing levels, adjust schedules as needed, and report on department needs and issues daily.
QUALITY/SAFETY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Lead quality assurance efforts, review policies, and ensure compliance with standards and regulations.
  • Monitor sterilization processes, interpret sterilizer parameters, and ensure environmental and instrumentation tracking compliance.
FINANCE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Monitor staffing against budget, inform management of issues, and assist with budget development.
  • Collaborate with Materials Management on supply needs and processing.
GROWTH/INNOVATION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Lead practice improvements, incorporate evidence-based practices, and support change initiatives.
  • Identify staff development opportunities, coordinate training, and oversee new employee onboarding and development plans.

Qualifications
EDUCATION
  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED, homeschool verification, or post-secondary education).
WORK EXPERIENCE
  • Six years of Sterile Processing experience in an acute care hospital.
License/Certification
REQUIRED LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
  • CRCST - Certified Registered Central Service Technician (HSPA) OR
  • CSPDT - Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CBSPD) AND
  • CIS - Certified Instrument Specialist (HSPA) within 1 year OR
  • CSIS - Certified Surgical Instrument Specialist (CBSPD) within 1 year.

  • Demonstrate skills and competencies necessary for safe job performance through ongoing assessments.
  • Proficient in English for effective communication impacting safety and security.
  • Effective communication with patients, families, physicians, and staff.

  • Ability to operate, troubleshoot, and train on departmental equipment.
