Position Title: STEAM Studio Sawmill Coordinator and Operator

Department: STEAM Studio

Position Summary

To convert salvaged timber from Hurricane Helene into useful lumber for community rebuilding projects, STEAM Studio has purchased a sawmill. With additional funding from the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, the project will expand with a dedicated truck, compact track loader, kiln kit, and a temporary position to coordinate and operate the mill to maximize lumber output. The STEAM Studio Sawmill Coordinator and Operator will oversee and implement this project.

  • Coordinate and schedule the sawmill operations
  • Maintain records of logs milled, species, origin, and board feet produced and distributed
  • Transport and operate the sawmill safely
  • Load logs onto the mill using a compact track loader
  • Organize and stack lumber
  • Build and operate the kiln
  • Support lumber distribution for hurricane relief and resilience projects
Position Details

Salary: $30.00 per hour

Minimum Education/Experience/Skills:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid driver's license
  • Experience with job site safety
  • Ability to model and enforce safety standards
  • Experience operating a sawmill or willingness to learn
  • Experience operating a compact track loader or willingness to learn
  • Experience driving a truck with a 20-foot trailer safely
  • Ability to operate a chainsaw safely
  • Effective communication skills
  • Knowledge of construction tools and safety
  • Proficiency with Google Calendar and Sheets

Preferred Education/Experience/Skills:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in a related field
  • Completion of Bobcat Skid-Steer Loader Online Operator Training or equivalent
  • OSHA safety and equipment operation certifications
